First off, get the superior, correctly tempered Eibach replacement spring rather than the Merc original.
This job needn't be the repair from Hell - read on.
There are two 'conventional' methods of getting enough clearance to insert the (compressed) new spring - you can :
1) - Drop the inboard end of the control arm : - problem is that the pivot bolt seizes solid in the arm bushing ... even a two-day WD-soak and 500nM impact wrench won't shift it (on a 2008 E220).
2) - Drop the subframe on one side : - problem is that the fuel filler tube is in the way, limiting clearance .
However, this poster shows how neither is necessary if you lever the control arm down at the outboard end with a trolley jack, wratchet-strap and sturdy beam :
Replaced rear coil springs on 2006 E350 - Mercedes-Benz Forum
Very straightforward - just make sure you make the strap as short as possible before jacking up against the subframe.
You WILL need an internal spring compressor (available on eBay - comes from Holland) :

You'll also need the bottom spring shim - the old one'll be shot
If you've already loosened any securing bolts before getting to this thread, make sure the car's sitting down before torquing up.
To get enough clearance for this op, put the wheel back on, jack the control arm up, put an old rim underneath the wheel and lower it back down onto the rim.
Buddaboom buddabing !
