BT testing 20MB broadband

Im stuck on a crappy little country exchange with a 2mb max, my sis who's half a mile up the road is on the main exchange and gets 10mb which is irritating, i keep thinking of fitting her router with a roof arial and an amp. :D

I dream of 2mb......lucky to get my full 540kb......worse was 240 kbs but sometimes it goes up to 850 kbs so would have thought I could get 1mb.....oh well the sheep are nice to look at in the fields...:D

Not bad considering I am going from the UK via the US and back again.

Well mine is the other end of the spectrum...:D How comes your less than 50 miles from CA?

^^ that's particularly crazy, an upload speed faster than down!

I guess you mean 20 Mbit/s with 20MB? This is not from my home but guys here often have fibre with 100/100 Mbit/s (some theoretical speed).

Only paying for 2Mbit/s so can't complain at this... :D

Because our US proxy server in the heart of Silicon Valley has a fatter pipe to the wibbly wobbly web than the UK one ;)

Despite the latency of crossing the atlantic twice, its still faster.

can someone explain what the "ping" rate means? Is higher or lower best?

The quicker the better, how long to 'bounce' something of the remote server.

Need to be careful with these speed tests. When I upgraded from 2 to 10 meg I chose a selection of speed testing services ( type broadband speed test into google) and tried a few. Results vary considerably.

Tried it again a few minutes ago. One site consistently give me a speed of about 6 to 7 meg, another says my connection is 9 point something.

Tried each of them 4 times. Results quite consistent.

There are many things beyond your broadband connection that influence the speed you actually experience.

A ping is typically (the term is ambiguous) a small packet of bytes that are sent to a target computer and it replies. You measure the time between sending the ping and the reply.

Analagous to a sonar ping.

There's another aspect which is that the ping is normally handled at the lowest level of the communications software in the computer operating system. So the reply doesn't involve much in the way of any extra processing that might add to the delay (ie. the target computer replies without having to think about it - bit like a reflex test performed by hitting your knee with a little hammer).

AKA an ICMP echo request. Often used to establish that the remote host is there and contactable.

Before I went away in April this year, the speed was less than 8 Meg.

It 13.5 Meg now, what going on? Does this means all the copper cables are gone replaced by fibre optic? I am with talktalk using BT network.

Will I get even higher speed?

Your not on fibre optic. They have just upgraded your exchange to ADSL2.

I tried getting hooked up with BT for phone and Broadband. They failed miserably with incompetence, sloppy and dishonest conduct. I'm not exaggerating, I felt I was dealing with a fledgling company with no experience. I terminated the contract as quickly as one of their promises evaporated. We now have a much improved carrier pigeon.
