Just found this bit of information; thought it would help someone avoid a fine!

Basically, it means that if you buy a car that is on a SORN certificate; you need to reapply for a SORN certificate even if the current one is still valid if you wish to avoid a fine!

Buying a vehicle which has SORN on it
If you keep the vehicle off the road then you’ll need to make a SORN when you become the registered keeper. The previous SORN comes to an end on the date you buy the vehicle.
