Buying a Mercedes and others saying that you are "rich."

This may not land very well given that a decent proportion of users of this forum are (I'm guessing) a certain age, but there is a whole generation now who live in real privilege but who genuinely don't know it, and will even deny it when it's pointed out to them.

My parents are like this. They still feel poor for some reason, even though they live lives which younger generations can only dream of.

OP you are rich, even if that makes you uncomfortable. Sorry.

Maybe if younger people stopped buying so many avocados they could also buy two houses, a brand new merc and retire at 55 ;)

Whilst I agree with the sentiment, the commas are superfluous and therefore incorrect.

As pointed out, the Forum has featured some pretty strange threads in the past but this topic has certainly excited some forthright responses. The general topic of what constitutes "wealth" should be carried over to the Politics thread as it concerns me as to how Labour would define it if they gain office.

My first house - an eight-roomed Georgian flat in Edinburgh's New Town - cost me £2500 in 1972. I did it up and did well when I sold it after some 10 years. It sold a couple of months ago for £495k. In London, friends have lived in St Georges Avenue, Tufnell Park for years and years. They own the entire four storey property outright. Mmmm, £1.6m - £1.8m? Do we all qualify as being "wealthy"

Finally, I would mention that in my wide circle of friends there is only one couple "lucky enough" to have been "blessed" with brats. That's an immediate saving of £150k - £180k each over 18 years.
;)
I'm enjoying the irony.

Incidentally, Miss Charles is alive.

She was seen by an ex pupil walking her dog.

How's that for superfluous detail?

One problem I did have was inheriting my Dad's London house. After IHT I still cleared a fair bit and the reaction from people I knew (even some cousins!) was disgraceful! I'd lost the last member of my direct family (no siblings) and yet I was the devil spawn because of the inheritance! Fact is, with the crazy house prices in London, even now, a lot of people will be leaving substantial inheritances, is that wrong?
Well, if you're a Corbyn supporter maybe it is... LOL

By the way, anyone planning to get out of the UK if Corbyn wins?

In my experience it isn't just limited to new, fairly new Mercedes or in my case a 16 years old Viano with 302K on the clock. A friend was dropped off & her sister(driving a new Peugeot)commented how rich I must be driving a car like that. Another neighbour asked me how much my "new" Mercedes cost(as in brand new & not to me). They were very surprised when I told them that their cars were worth 4 or 5 times what I paid for mine. It does polish up well & if it had lower miles then it would be worth a fair amount more but certainly still a lot less than theirs. I should add that this is in rural France though..............

This is all you need to know to be wealthy although inflation has taken it's toll since Mr Micawber's time.

"Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen pounds nineteen shillings and six pence, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery."

Whereabouts do you live?? I’m in Mill Hill.
I used to live not far from you, in Stanmore. My money-grabbing first wife fleeced me for the house (no mortgage left on it) whilst I kept my Mercedes E-class, MGB Roadster and company pension. I still think I got the better deal, which was nothing to do with possessions.

Ha ha, definitely not but hopefully Johnson will.
Sorry shouldn't take up this topic on this thread

I know Stanmore well. Too many new builds there now. We were out in North Harrow on Saturday night.

A person who owns $80,000 or $200,000 car is rich. People live in $100,000 apartments.

Not necessarily here in the UK.
There are people who live in local authority houses, still renting, not bought, who are leasing or buying high value cars and I wonder where their priorities lie.

You are right about the younger people/group and this is why I said I hope property prices crashed even though we may lose out as we have a second property rented out, bought for cash couple of years ago.

We could if we wish, sell the rental but that would lower our income and we'd be digging deeper into our savings.

We have three grown-up children all with properties near us. Our daughter rents her apartment out and lives with us and we are very happy with that. Our sons both recently moved homes and upgraded and have massive mortgages. We aim to sell the rental when I get my additional pensions
and share amongst the three of them the money from the sale after taxes and hopefully able to top up with another150/200k approx hopefully totally 550/600k. We were never given anything and did not want anything. My father was ok, he too drove the E type Mec since 1972 and all of his assets went to his second wife as she was expecting and had no real money of her own, I felt it was right it went to her and even if I did not like it, it was his choice. When we bought our first property in London we paid 75k we'd moved from Bedford and got 20k for ours. So we can see that property prices are ott and a person/s with one property and little income/saving are on the whole struggling to upkeep larger, victorian type property and/or heat them adequately. Therefore, we could squander our money by upgrading to a large detached home in a nicer area of Bexley, buy a brand news GLS and possibly give 10/20k to kids. But we won't and plan is to give them larger months to help reduce mortgages and we would only do that if they continued to do so as now, EG -work, spend wisely, never pay interest on their CC's and never hire purchase a car and have money in the bank for a rainy day. We've not told re our plans because if I knew my parents were going to give me close to 200k, I'd leave work, lol.

We've worked hard, spent and saved wisely and we would not be where we are had it not been for our parents the way they brought us up and as importantly our children who never asked us for a penny since leaving education. I know of people that work 50+ hours but dont have a lot to show for it as they have bills to pay and low wages. Then you get those that work as hard but paying off the 2nd/3rd wife and multiple children and buying everything on credit. A fact that divorce can hit anyone at any time and at times outside one's control! Why spend 10k when you could have brought it outright for half the money, why not wait until you can afford it. (Not aiming post at you just a general response.)

Yes, we want property prices to crash and yes I do want a brand new GLS, even a GLS/AGM but it would be throwing money down the drain
and I could never justify that amount on a car with our net worth. If we were worth 3/7 mill and had a property on top of that, then I'd buy. We are not rich, we are not poor, we are ok, doing well as ex ordinary workers and both of us worked on the factory floor and we do recognise that health is wealth. I've never wanted to work that's the kind of bloke I am but worked since leaving school until my early retirement and my wife did that the month before me.
Thank you.

I was raised in Maygrove Rd in Kilburn, then Brampton Rd in Kingbury as a nipper.
I couldn't afford to buy in either area now.
I don’t know Kilburn that well and I worked for Harry Neal when they were based on the Kingsbury Road. The crowd that I was out with on Saturday are my posse from The Prince of Wales pub on Queensbury roundabout.

I'm surprised final salary pensions haven't been mentioned yet...

FYI, I don't care what other people think.

Thats the major problem with the modern world and with social media in particular -
people are always worrying about what other people think and not about what really matters !

Many thanks for your simple, yet very effective post. A post that I have taken to heart.
Therefore, to those that are unhappy with what I have posted here, I could not
really care less.

I had these same accusations levelled at me by one of our groundskeepers so I got our head butler to fire him for suggesting such a preposterous thing.

I asked my wife where the tea strainer was last night.
She said "Oh! It's his night orff"
