Buying a Mercedes and others saying that you are "rich."

I know Stanmore well. Too many new builds there now. We were out in North Harrow on Saturday night.
Stanmore was starting to go downhill when I was living there 25 years ago. I moved out in the hope it would recover - but it didn’t! I know what you mean about the new builds, but even the flats are far more than I could afford. As for the traffic ...

I'm surprised final salary pensions haven't been mentioned yet...
I’m delighted with my final salary pension. And even more delighted that I’ve been receiving it since I was 50 . Thank you everyone for your contributions :D

Final salary pensions are an insult to those who work outside the public sector IMO.
I don't begrudge those who have them, but don't agree with the principle behind them.

Now awaiting plenty of incoming flak:D

They were not always the preserve of the public sector...but since Maxwell's time they've been made too expensive...even for the public sector.

I totally agree with you, but I wasn’t going to turn mine down when it was offered (from outside the private sector).

And here comes the flak :p
Public sector pensions are just adequate (take it from me) unless your a big wig on the council. :)

I don’t know Kilburn that well and I worked for Harry Neal when they were based on the Kingsbury Road. The crowd that I was out with on Saturday are my posse from The Prince of Wales pub on Queensbury roundabout.
Are we talking the old Bandwagon here :)

Or an MP. :wallbash:
Their final salaries are obscene.

Going a bit OT now, solly:oops:

Half your final salary as a pension and a lump sum 1.5 times final salary...what's not to like? Though, it has to be said, most people are not members long enough to get top whack. Try getting the same benefits in a non fs scheme.

Yep, like I said if your a council big wig, not if your a council runt.

A good pension ?

A guaranteed portion of your salary.

If your on a good salary to begin with, then yes a % of that would be decent, now don't get me wrong, the council's served me well for 40 years and given me a decent living, and I'm not moaning about my pension, it is what it is, (as they say) what bugs me is people think that all public sector workers are on a fantastic pension, they aren't.

I understand that new entrants aren't always offered great terms but you must be well set up in relation to your employed income.

You have a guaranteed pension for life.

Many others in a DC can lose a significant portion of the value of their pot just before they retire.,And are offered pitifully low annuity rates of 2-2.5% of the pot. A £100k pot doesn’t pay much if s pension.

You may not have a large pension income but it is (all but) guaranteed- I’ll take that over a variable income that I have had to fund (ie save) myself.

You lot have got me on the final pension salary as I don't have one so I hope you are happy. But I do have a Ford pension and that is as good as any pension IMO. The lump sum for 22 yrs at the place was a little gold mine :)
