A company called Express Auto Keys recently supplied me with a key for my '60's Honda motorbike, purely from the number on the lock barrel.

The company also list MB cars. However, their website requests, to order a key, if the existing key has a transponder for enabling an immobiliser. My car has a Toad alarm/immobiliser for which I have a fob which also remote controls the door locks.I only use the key for starting the car.

Does anyone know if a '95 w124 e300d would have a transponder equipped key, or how to recognise one with or without ?

Some later W124's have infrared unlocking on the driver's door only - recognisable by an IR window in place of the key slot on the drivers' door , and a normal key slot on the passenger door ( although my 1999 Indian manufactured E250D just has standard mechanical locks ) ; most others are simple mechanical locks only and any transponders , remote locking etc will be aftermarket .

The good news is that the normal mechanical key ( last time I bought one for my W126 was a couple of years ago ) was about £21 , prior to that they had been about £11 cut to chassis no from the dealers .

There have always been places in Germany who will supply genuine blanks and , if required , cut to key number from the old 'Neiman' , 'huf' , 'ymos' etc keys as used in Aenauers , Pontons , Fintail , early SL's and other models from the 1960's and earlier ( when there were sets of different keys for ignition , door locks , boot and fuel cap ) .

Thanks for the info' Derek on the keys/locks. I hav'nt done yet, but I will also give the owner's handbook a read for any info' regarding an immobiliser if fitted. I'll probably use the Key company I mentioned for a spare key as they were very efficient with the motorbike key I ordered.
