I'm looking at purchasing a 300TD W124 with 200.000K. Are this old Mercs really as good as people say. Any buying advice would be very much appricated.
Thanks in advance

They are good but rememeber that at 200k she will be in middle age and so may need a few jobs doing.

I have a 95 e300d w124 estate with 202k miles. Runs almost like it did when I bought it with 30k miles on it. BUT it has been serviced properly inc ATF and filter changes, brake fluid changes, coolant changes and engine oil and filter every 6k miles. So it is probably set to do another 200k. It will need new engine mounts soon (£200 ish) apart from that not much that I can think of. It is starting to show the age and mileage with the drivers seat bolster and a few rust spots on one of the front wings. On the other hand if you buy one with 200k that has had a patchy service history then you could be in for thousands of pounds of repairs - eg autobox; rear wheel bearings, engine mounts, brake discs, front suspension joints, rust issues, self levelling rear suspension, head gasket, engine wiring loom on the petrols more than the diesels, glow plug bodges on the diesel.......so buy carefully and take someone who knows what they are looking at if you do not.

Most new Mercs of that vintage were owned by quite wealthy people and be assured most of those people were NOT diy types.

Those Mercs typically had more money spent on them in the form of routine maintenace and repairs, than would be spent on most other marques,
over the same period.

So, in conclusion the high miles achieved have been achieved due to massive expenditiure in most cases - so do not be misled into thinking it has all come about through some magical build quality and abnormally good engineering.

That continues to be the situation ongoing, you just cannot neglect maintenace and repairs, and it all costs money, unless you are into diy, which many forum members are.

I just sold one with 165,000 miles and FSH, was on a J-Plate.

One of the guys on here came to look at actually and was impressed I think.

At the end of the day, I have seen W124's in cyprus being used as cabs that have covered over 500,000 miles, and on one occassion, over 1 million miles!

My experience with the w124 300d estate is that it is a mixture of the two things. Sure I did spend an arm and a leg on routine servcing to begin with at the MB dealer but then as the car got older and I wised up that the servicing was not difficult I do most of it myself. The engineering is solid and coupled with good maintenance will give high mileages - what impresses me is that the car drives almost the same as it did when almost new in terms of performance, noise, road holding and braking.
Anyway the upshot is that they are fantastic cars if they have been looked after but potential money pits if not and you are not into at least a bit of DIY.

dont let the mileage push you away.we have that mileage on petrol engines and still sound superb.if the price is good, just go for it

OK, thanks for all the replies. Well been and done it now, brought a K Reg 300TD. Its from an Independant Merc Specialist so I really hope its not going to be a money pit. I've had old Volvo's before and they've always been OK and the Merc is suppose to be the Daddy of build quailty so.............. anyway, I'm going to stop worrying about it and enjoy it. Thanks again for you views and opinions.

Regards
Ian
