C220 CDI SPORT
Hi all
I am looking for a C220 or C270 estate, but I have just found a 2006 C320 CDI Avantgarde SE 7G-Tronic with 90k for sale locally Which ticks all my boxes I am going to look at the car today is there anything I should be looking out for? Or should I forget it and keep looking for a 220/270? All advise welcome Thanks in advance.

The 320CDI with the 7g is a cracking car. However, some say that the 7g can be troublesome and costly to repair - but I don't know this for fact (other than through reading this when considering buying a 320CDI myself some years ago...)

Also the V6 does suffer from some costly problems.

I'll attest to that. Lovely engine when they work, distressing when you fork out £2000 of your own money and the year before nearly £700 was forked out by the warranty. Refined, very powerful and economical.

Me I am not a fan of the 7g. Others, for reasons lost to me having driven a fair few 7g cars, think its amazing.

Me, I'd get the 220cdi or the 270cdi, with a preference to a late 270cdi.

Whichever you choose, service history is most important.

You may find, after having driven the 320, that you "need" that V6 power/refinement mix.

I too had some costly issues with my 320cdi. Luckily all were covered by warranty, which was just as well as I would have been very unhappy to fork out over £3K in the first three months of ownership!!

From what I've heard (and I might be wrong..) 320cdis after 2007 are less prone to the known issues Steve and I had. I stand ready to be corrected! :D

Thanks for the advice but what are the " known issues "?

Steve will no doubt tell you about his, but mine were failure of crankshaft bearing and failure of EGR valve. The dealer also changed a chain tensioner as it was found to be prematurely worn. All this on a car with (at the time) under 50K miles.

This little lot cost the dealer (as well as MB) over £3000.

I would echo what *** said, find a nice condition, late 270 and enjoy the more than adequate performance, good fuel economy and general reliability.

An early V6 Cdi could be Ok, but it could bankrupt you and cause lots of stress, allied to poor fuel economy.

Look out for black death on the injectors on the 220 & 270, also make sure the radiator has been changed.

The 320 V6 CDi had a few teething problems at first so I've heard, but I've had two W211's with that engine and had no problems at all, one a 55 plate, the other a 57 plate. Service history is paramount (as it is with all Mercedes). I've owned a W211 E270 CDi and that gave me no problems whatsoever in 10k miles.

The 270 5cyl CDi is a very strong engine with a good mix of decent power and economy, although once you drive the V6 CDi it makes the 270 feel dated.

I drove a C270cdi. Really nice engine, a lot nicer than the 220cdi I have but they don't do 5pots in the 204. I had a 320cdi E class and I found the 220cdi ok, but I would steer the OP into a 270cdi. Really good consumption, bags of power in the C class and proven reliabilility and that nice 5 speed auto

I`m in a quandary now when I went to see the 320 they had a newer 220 avantgarde which looked like a tidier car for a little more money .So it will be a sleepless night thinking about which one to go for.

The 4 pot 200/220 cdi engine is generally reckoned to be a good'un if that helps.

I drove a C203 320cdi for upwards of 50k miles. Not a fault and a lovely engine. Had it Mot'd at a local main Vauxhall garage as it is close and very good head mechanic. He tested car and rated engine as best there is on the market. But make sure you have a good warranty (mad not to) and then enjoy your car

I think I have found it :bannana: Going to see a C220 CDI Tomorrow morning. Sounds just what i am after heres hoping I might own a C Class tomorrow :thumb:

:thumb: Well I`ve done it . Just drove my 2007 C220 CDI Sport home It seems brilliant but early days yet. I now need 3 weeks to read the manual and find out how to work everything. :bannana:

Read the manual???? Real men don't read manuals!!!

Only joking! You'll need the manual to find out what all the toys do. Enjoy your new MB.
