E320 CDI
Hello All

I have a 2000 E320 CDI which has the fault code c1140 steering position sensor fault. I have changed both the break light switch and the steering angle sensor with no joy. I have also performed the lock to lock resest several times again with no joy i am now out of ideas.

The esp and abs lights are on constantly and therefore will not pass its MOT, i have rang mercedes who have offered no help at all, can anyone help?

Who fitted the steering angle sensor? Was it new or second hand? Have you tried erasing the faults?

It was second hand but i was assured it was in full working order, it was fitted at a local garage and yes we have erased the faults and it keeps coming back up.

I have now had the tracking done as well with no effect, all three lights come back on, abs, bas, and esp.

You need to have the ESP actual values checked, & check steering angle when steering wheel straight ahead, easy to have it 360 degrees out, whilst there check that the actual value changes when you move steering wheel so that you know that the steering angle sensor fitted is working.

You will need to get it on suitable diagnostic equipement, some where with star diagnostics

Iam also having the same problem in my 2003 e220 cdi.
The bas abs esp light would appear intermittently without pattern. SDS showed dtc abot steering angle sensor. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

sometimes a steering angle reset is required, this is a series of turns and driving straight at a given speed and not turning steering wheel more than 1890 degrees. It can be found on star.
I am sure a decent independent would know how to perform this function.
I had ESP/BAS light on my w163 some years ago, then ABS light and the steering angle reset put them out and they have never come back.
There is a thread on it somewhere.

Thanks Joderest. Amother question, did you change the steering angle sensor? What may have possible triggered it in the 1st place?
I don't know if it is also the reason why the rpm is not going over 3000. Hope you can give me a detailed instruction about the reset.
Thanks again.

no, i did not change the sensor. When i collected the car from London, on the way home i was badly cut up by an HGV, which caused me the slide on wet roads and some frantic steering to miss the HGV and the barrier. Thankfully i avoided all, however, the ESP/BAS light came on. The next day i performed the lock to lock thing, the lights went out but the ABS light came on. When i had it read by a local chap the fault "perform road test" came up. No one could tell me what this was and many hours of research later came up with the process, which worked for me. Its a Star document. I will try and find the thread i posted.
It may not be your problem, but could be worth a try.

found the process, here it is

Flabbergasted, never has my gasted been so flabbered !!!!!!!!!!! IT WORKED
After 10 days of driving with the ABS light on, and it was unable to be reset by scanner, just kept coming back on, after a lot of research on line, found the drive test process. I did it just once, light went out at end of test, driven about 20 miles since, stopped and restarted about 10 times, still not come back on, so fingers crossed, resolved. In case any other member has same issue, here is the process copied from a STAR document.

using scanner, ensure there are no uncleared fault codes, and only the "road test" fault is present, end diagnostic and disconnect scanner.

Road Test
1. Switch off ignition
2. Start engine
3. press ESP off switch, ESP warning light and BAS/ESP light will come on, ESP will now be switched off
Note. The road test must be conducted with-in 15 seconds
4. Drive the vehicle forward at approximately 6-10 mph (must keep constant speed)
5. After a short distance (few yards) turn the vehicle left and then right. The steering wheel should be turned between 90 and 180 degrees.
6. with in 10 seconds begin turning a quarter circle and then briefly steer in the other direction.

The lights will go out if successful. If not repeat process from 1. Its important not to turn steering wheel more than 180 degrees, I marked the top with a bit of masking tape so I knew where it was all the time. You must also keep to the correct speed.

It worked for me, I hope it may help someone else out.

worth a try

Joderest, thank you. I will give it a try.
Hopefully I wull be successfull in doing this.
My abs bas esp light would turn on one by one and would happen intermittently. I will try what you instructed. Thanks again man. Thank you for spending time answering my querry. I will keep you posted.
