I'm going to be attempting to replace the passenger door side glass on my 300CE this weekend as the current one fitted is badly scratched (a long story which I'll tell one day!).

I've done a bit of searching but haven't found much in the way of info or walk-throughs.

I've never done a form of glass replacement before so wondering if there are any guides, tips, pit-falls to avoid, adjustments etc.

I'm currently at the stage that the door-card is off.

Thanks in advance.

Derin,

I did this on my SEC in the dark (it was winter). A 126 is not a 124, I know, but I expect the procedure is similar. It was relatively easy.

The glass has an aluminium trim bonded to its lower edge. This is attached to the window regulator (i.e. the winding mechanism, forgive me if I am teaching granny how to suck eggs) by three bolts. These are readily visible and accessible.

The glass was also attached at each lower corner to what I can best describe as a jaw, which in turn slides up and down the guide runners in the door. The glass is sandwiched into the metal jaw (which in turn is fitted with a plastic jaw) and held by a single bolt. Again, this is readily visible and accessible but pay attention to the orientation and alignment of the parts.

The window is located by a series of stops which you should not have to adjust. They are attached to the door at various places, in each case with a single nut. They are adjusted by loosening the nut and moving the stops. There is also an adjustment behind the rubber seal which is behind the chrome door jamb trim. Perhaps I was lucky but my new window sealed itself well without any need to readjust the stops.

I found it difficult to get the old glass out and the new glass in without either (a) scratching the new glass or (b) damaging the door top seal.

I suspect full instructions are in WIS which is accessible through the EPC which comes with your Merc Club membership.

I have the MB instructions here but can't up-load them because the are slightly too large, PM me your email and I will send them through. It does say to take the seals off the top of the door frame....

Before fitting windows and regulators spend a few minutes in Zen-like contemplation as the next 45 minutes will involve cursing & swearing

The mechanisms are always covered in grease so have a few sets of gloves to hand (I imagine you might have access to these!) If the glass is left unsupported it will drop into the door at some point so prop it up while you fight with the regulator

The key is to get the glass, the regulator and all the mounts in the correct orientation simultaneously. The best analogy is to say it's like standing in the corner of a room and touching all four walls at the same time - bloody impossible

Good luck

On the coupe, if you touch any of the adjustments, the subsequent air seal to the rear window will be difficult and you will suffer from a noisy car afterwards with a constant whoosh of air between the joint.

Do let us know how you get on and any tips for a successful seal.

Perhaps do a before and after drive on same stretch of road for a comparison.
