c124 300E 24V Sportline
Hi
I recently bought a 1989 300E 24V coupe in black, what a car...but I went away for a week and came back and it now wont run. The last time I used it it seemed to misfire occasionally but now it starts briefly then dies, like its run out of fuel although theres fuel in it.
I bought the car as a project and as yet haven't had chance to do anything under the bonnet so no components have been changed recently.
Thanks

UPDATE
Changed the 10 amp fuse near the battery, not sure what its for but it had blown and it started and ran for about 5 mins then stopped...now wont start at all??
This is a bit more complicated than mending a mark 2 escort methinks

I've heard of this issue on these 24v engines, mines misfiring aswell and idling really high. It's something to do with a sensor I think. Somebody will pin point it for you on here though.

help

After it stops check if its fireing. Pull off a plug lead pop in an old plug ,hold it for a short timre by earth point ,watch it as it pushes a few volts enough to kill you .So use a rubber glove .Did it spark. If not then its electrical. If it did spark its fuel problem Then remove the metal pipe thats on the side of the fuel distributor ,cover it with a rag so petrol wont run over the engine. Now spin it over .
Did you have fuel. If not, then you pumps not running . Check and come back.

I think Gunning is referring to the crank position sensor. The car typically Ned's to warm up before the cut out happens. I have also seen a split breather pipe which caused a similar problem. Would tick over in a very lumpy fashion and would cut out as soon as it as put in gear. A bit of tape was enough to cure the problem until a new pipe was fitted.

good

Thank you but you must eliminate one thing at a time .
1 spark
2 fuel delivery.
Then go from there. When it stops try one or the other.

The fuel pump relay on these is 2 stage. One- priming-- on ignition switch on the relay supplies power to the pump to prime the system. Stage two --the relay requires an engine running signal to continue to supply power to the fuel pump. Sounds as if you might have a faulty fuel pump relay or its not getting the engine running signal. They can sometimes be mended by removing the relay can and remelting the solder on the small printed circuit board inside to get rid of any dry joints due to vibration over the years. If its the simple small relay then fine- if its the larger one then you are in trouble as they are difficult to repair/ expensive to replace. lots of info on fuel pump relays on the forum.

It does sound like a fuel problem. The car probably has two fuel pumps and a filter under the rear of the car. It will have an EZL ignition module under the bonnet, a distributor and a single coil. All pretty straightforward

Do the basic tests first. Faults on these cars are pretty predictable - bad distributor caps & rotor arms, fuel pump relays, blocked fuel filters, bad EZL module and bad CPS
