C180 Komp Coupe 07 Flood Damage

The DAS is the ignition switch, it's a complex bit of kit.
The ignition lock is electrical and is motor driven. Dont want to go into detail but you should be able to get round this if you have a look.

The key shouldn't need reprogramming because it doesn't rely on power from the key, it's driven off the car battery for the immobiliser and from the key for the door locks.

I suspect the CAN has been flooded and isn't allowing communication between the various modules around the car, hence nothing will work.

Strip all the modules that have got wet and check the CAN connections.

Try disconnecting everything you think might have got damaged and see if you can get power into the rest of the car.

I appologose if this is obvious but what does CAN stand for and where is the module in the car?

When i connect the battery the instrument cluster lights up, and in the center i have a mesage saying a rear brake light is out, it also beeps when the headlights are left on, would the car use this CAN for that or something different?

I Know it is along way off for me yet but after removing the srs module and cleaning it with contact cleaner it seems to look okay, do you think there is a chance if plugged back in it could set the air bags off? If there is any risk i think i will have to buy a new one as i don't fancy replacing the airbags.

Thanks

CAN stands for Control Area network. This is the network that all the modules round the car use to talk to each other. If there is a breakdown then signals can't be passed so things don't work, like the engine ECU can't see the ignition for example.
It's a two wire 5 volt network, worth checking all the conectors are Ok.

Not sure whether the bulb check will be using the CAN, the instrument cluster does but not sure whether the rear lights are CAN driven on your car.

DID the SRS module get wet, if so I'd replace it as it's a critical item and could short out so setting off the bags. If it didn't get wet then it should be Ok.

Yeah the SRS definately got wet so i wont take the chance and replace it i think.

I'm off for a couple of days this week so will check the 2 wires, will they be any significate colour so there easy to spot ie SRS is yellow etc?

They are different to all the others. iirc they are UTP (unshielded twisted pair) so will be twisted together all the way along.

Good Luck with this one. You are going to need it as well as lots of electronic replacements. Needs a Star check to see how much damage has been done.

Im really intrigued to know what you paid for it?

And how you came about such a find?

Wiring loom replacement on a BMW 5-series with minor flood damage.I would imagine our insurance premiums will be going up to pay for all this labour.
I bet they can't get the dash back in without the car rattling for ever more !

the last few pics have convinced me never to buy a flood damaged car

I thought that was a piccy from the Transformers movie .....

I should buy all of those MB and have a play.

Just as a side issue, maybe this is why we are getting bad dealer feedback as the sales of new ones must have had a boost with the flooding

Come on its not that bad, a bit of help from the forum and you would have it fixed in a few hours

Talking to an MB engineer recently who said it took 50hrs to completely rewire an S class.

Not a job for the Faint-Hearted eh???

They look dear already, and looking at that BMW stripped out, whoever takes these things on needs a workshop with a lot of spare space!

Very true as the parts cannot be stacked, the seats, door panels and others should not be in the same working area, one litttle ding in the dash for instance wipe ££££ off the value of the car

Maybe i'm mad, but those last few pictures actually make me want to do this !!

Anyone got a flood damaged ML420CDI ???

Richard
