My C220CDI is 4 months old and approaching 5000 miles, the MPG figures on the computer are getting worse. My commute is a 20 mile mix of twisty country road, urban stop start and a 4 mile dual carriage way. In July / august with about 1500 miles the computer was showing 40 / 41 mpg from start! Today it's showing 36 mpg with no significant change to the traffic conditions or my driving style. I have the Eco stop start function working, the air con is switched OFF! The car is a sport estate with auto box and running in comfort mode.

I traded in a C200CDI sport auto, non blue efficiency and 5 speed box against this new car, the 200 was shown around 37 mpg on the same route.

Am I right to be concerned? I know the Mercedes quoted mpg figures are never completely true but considering the spec of the C220 compared to the old C200 I was hoping for an improvement not a decrease in mpg.

You need to give it some more time to losen up.

MPG will increase from 8k upwards from my experience.

Fuel stations have switched to 'winter' diesel? :dk:

I'll share my daft thought- is it possible that if the majority of stop-start halts are just short enough to trigger the stop, it might actually increase consumption? Might the "Eco" function be more focused on reducing emissions than consumption?

Winter diesel.
Big drop in temperature over the last couple of weeks.
10% dip to be expected really.

Also, why turn the climate off?
It will make sod all difference and you end up making it stink from stale bacteria.

Eco Stop Start can actually increase consumption as it drains the battery and to recharge it, the alternator field coils strengthen, making the engine harder to turn. To prove this effect run the engine when warm with all electrics off then switch on the lights etc, you will hear the tone alter as more fuel is injected. Even raising an electric window has this effect. You don't get owt for nowt in this world. If you don't believe me, I drive 2850 hp diesel locomotives and switching train heat on consumes a gallon and a half per mile more, and even with that horse power you still hear the tone alter!

As above with engine block temp, winter fuel mix and eco on short stops but OP's figures still look poor. I'm regularly getting mid-50s on my 12 mile eachway urban commute.

Have you checked your tyre pressures? Checked mine last weekend (3psi down at each corner) and now getting an extra 3mpg.....

Of course not. You're driving the finest car money can buy. Be happy! :)

:D Steve, are you here?

Over the moon mate, it's finally sunk in what a marvellous car the 204 estate is. I love mine.

Do the later cars still have the electric block heater? Mine has a 1.7KW heater, which works below 8C. That's an immense load on the alternator.

I love mine too

C220CDI Blue efficiency sport estate

I am getting 50-52 0n a run, and average 43.2 since reset and almost 8000 miles. I'm not a Larry-leadfoot, but do press on when I can!
4 months in I'm very pleased indeed!

my S320 is 11yrs old in January i drove it to Corfu this September drove right down through Italy to Bari, and got ferry across the car loved it 45 to the gallon total miles for the trip was 3100, of course it would of been cheaper to fly but i have always wanted to do the drive, diesal loves to run hot not keep stopping.

Driving way more fun than flying

I had the same problem and I got mine 4 months ago. Just got it back from Mercedes garage and found out that shortly after recieving the car there was an update to the software in the CCU. Just averaged 61 mpg in minor roads and over 80 mpg on motorway driving at 65 MPH. Little annoyed at the money I have now lost so will be contacting customer care.

So from an update you have gone from what mpg?

80mpg, I've got the pre BE engine and glad if it registers 40mpg on rural roads and 50mpg on a motorway at 65mph.

That's because you have the old 5 speed auto 'box, if you had the far superior 7g you would be getting a good 30% more. :p

Sometimes, less is more.

Quality and reliability are far more important than MPG. Some afflicted C classes have the lesser transmission and the rattling dash. I have the last of the good ones:bannana::bannana::bannana::bannana::bannana::bannana::bannana::bannana:

About 35 to 38 tootling about town, fetching grandkids from school etc.
About 32 towing the caravan.
Exactly 58.9, (according to trip computer) returning from Dorset to Staffs non-stop apart from a comfort break at Michael Wood. (Call that Comfort? Strewth!)
The speed average for that journey was 55.2mph.

I think that's not bad for a 1700kg automatic.

In town at rush hour I switch the engine stop/start off, I find it annoying in slow traffic queues and it seems to catch itself out from time to time. En passant, there's nothing new under the sun, engine stop/start was available on some cars in the 1930s, under the nom de plume "Startix".
