C220 CDI. Mpg?

About 35 to 38 tootling about town, fetching grandkids from school etc.
About 32 towing the caravan.
Exactly 58.9, (according to trip computer) returning from Dorset to Staffs non-stop apart from a comfort break at Michael Wood. (Call that Comfort? Strewth!)
The speed average for that journey was 55.2mph.

I think that's not bad for a 1700kg automatic.

In town at rush hour I switch the engine stop/start off, I find it annoying in slow traffic queues and it seems to catch itself out from time to time. En passant, there's nothing new under the sun, engine stop/start was available on some cars in the 1930s, under the nom de plume "Startix".

This is interesting. I got 46-47mpg last week on a 55mph run over 12 miles of the A40, so not that far out from your 55mpg - I would have expected the Diesel to be more frugal than the Petrol (mine is C180K) by some margin?

The car did 58.9mpg and 55.2mph average over the journey from Dorset to Staffs. It had done about 4,000 miles at the time and has still only done 7,600, so may get better as it loosens up.

Any of these brim measurements or off the obc?
I suspect they're obd figures Steve, just filled my 212 up last night & before resetting the trip computer it showed an average of 38.7mpg since the last refill & after doing the maths it was actually 34.5mpg_nothing i didn't expect & perfectly acceptable on a 2 ton v6 which should get even better with miles(it's on 862 now!:D).

I did say quite clearly "off the trip computer". I've got far better things to do than fiddle about brimming tanks and writing down average mileages.

I am finding this debate very interesting indeed. There is indeed a trade off between the 5 sp auto, and 7G boxes my commute leads me to think that the 7G would be a better but much more costly option right now but a 5 speed would probably match my current car.

As for economy, I always cross refer tank brim to brim and obc, I am no lead foot either but in a "warm" run down from Aberdeen yesterday back to Glasgow the car gave a journey mpg of 54mpg (still in my Vauxhall right now) where the official figures quote 48.7mpg extra urban, and trust me I wasn't exactly doing 70mph ;)
My engine is now showing 83,000 miles has had a new timing belt very complete servicing and is as strong now as it was when I got it if not better! than it was at 18,500 miles old.

I think engines respond very very much to style and manner of driving, I know someone who has difficulty getting over 40mpg with an identical car to mine on a very very similar type of drive. I bet if we swapped cars I could reverse the figures in a month.

I plan on getting a C220 or C250 Sport in the next few weeks (am currently enjoying my perfect car search) not buying it for ultimate economy, buying it for,,, me me and ME!!!!!!

Thats pretty incredible 1600rpm @ 70mph What is a 5 speed turining by comparison? 2K

2200 in my estate. The final drives quite short but it accelerates really well in fifth.

The 7g automatic in my car seems to be quite reluctant to change into 7th until you are above 50mph, which is fair enough as the engine is only turning at about 1200rpm, but as a result there does seem to be a stepchange in the fuel economy when you move off the side roads. As usual, the question of choice of car is determined by the driver's needs, and mine are a sort of Jeckyll and Hyde choice between local side road drifting, and being a bit more assertive on the motorways on the relatively few accasions I need to be.

The C220CDI makes a fair fist of offering this choice, I have neither the reactions nor the talent as a driver to make it possible to use all the performance of the car, but it's nice to know that a fair amount of reserves are there if needed. I have been wondering if I did the right thing going from manual to automatic, and still have come to no firm conclusion after 12 months of owning the car.
