C220cdi, 2003 Avantgarde SE estate
Hi all, first post here.

My C220cdi estate, reg feb 2003, built dec 2002 is on it's original battery. the car is garaged and is still starting ok even if left 1-2 weeks however I'm concerned that the battery will not last forever and as a precaution have a new Bosch battery in stock.

What precautions should I take in making the change, I had thought of making up a cable to connect a slave battery before disconnecting the original, then making sure that the vehicle positive was protected change the battery, hopefully keeping all of the settings on the car.

Am I on the right lines.

Hi Alan IMHO you don't need any back up device, just take the negative terminal first to avoid short circuit and then the positive. When connecting the new battery the positive terminal first and the negative after.Cheers

Make sure you have your radio code, and you may need to reset your abs/esp by turning steering wheel from lock to lock.

Thank you both for your replies.

job done. I did make up a lead and used a slave battery as I do not have any radio code. I bought the car new and I do keep all the paperwork so was surprised that the code (if required) is not there. A camera soft lens case excellent in insulating the positive clamp.

Only difficulty, being that I'm not as strong as I used to be, actually lifting the batteries out/in. Still a few choice words and that seemed to resolve itself.

Rory, thank you for your reply, the thread that you referred to made interesting reading and supported my decision to use the slave supply.
