Hi all,

Wondering if anyone can help, purchased this C220d Feb last year, just put 4 brand new tyres on at over £1200 for the set, all 4 old tyres had cords exposed on the inside edge.

I've put the same 19 inch tyres on just changed to Goodyear and I'm getting quite bad rubbing when going over bumps or with passengers/luggage loaded in the car.

The rubbing seems to be on the mudflap thats attached to the bumper section.

I've attached some pictures if anyone could suggest what to do it would be amazing as these tyres won't last too long the way they are going!

Thanks in advance!

Dan

Hello and welcome . From the photos they appear way too wide for the car , photos can be a bit deceptive though ,are they stock ? Any hubspacers fitted.?

What size are the wheels and tyres ? looks like 275 , what car is this ? W204 ? The 204 C63 came out with narrower tyres than you have on the rear there (if they are 275's)

Also , some might not agree, but all tyres are not created equal , some 275vwill actually be wider than other makes of 275.

An 'edge on' photo might help, absolutely zero of the tyre should be sticking out of the wheel arch.

Hi Pete,

Thank you for the quick reply!

Yes they are 275/30R20 which based on what you said are too wide!

I dont believe they are stock although I bought it like that.

It had cheap budget tyres on before and I don't believe they rubbed but maybe like you say the Goodyear ones are a bit thicker.

I will post an edge on picture in the morning if you wouldn't mind taking a look!

Regarding spacers I dont believe there to be any spacers on there.

I am assuming if the 275 are too wide that is alloy replacement aswell? I kind of assumed it would be the rim size but if they do stick out then it might not be rim size its likely the width like you say?

Thanks again, will upload pics!

Aftermarket rims with an low offset? They do seem to to be quite a long way outside the arches as Petrol Pete says. A little bit surprising they passed an MOT if they "poke" as much as the photos suggest.

Also:

1. Clearly, this is the wrong rim/tyre combination for the car.

2. Once you sort out the wheels and have the correct size rims and tyres, you want a full-geometry wheel alignment done to ensure that the tyres do not wear unevenly like the previous set. Having said that, it is possible that the eneven wear was caused by the wider wheels. Either way get the alignment checked once you've sorted the wheel size.

Yeah....wrong wheels and tyres for car. Prob aftermarket or taken from another Mercedes model. Wont be do anything for alignment or handling I would think. No one needs that much rubber for under 200 horses.....and as you have found out you could save a wad of cash with stock size tyres. £1200???....ouch. My first two cars together did not cost that!!
From the angle in those photos I would not have passed that in my testing days. The tyre sidewall can bulge out from under the arches....but the metal of the wheels themselves cant......although around here I see Defenders with wheels much further out everyday.....no doubt the stock wheels go on for the test!!!!

That would be my guess too.

The OP needs to check the wheels for width and offset. From the photos posted, changing the tyres won't resolve the issue.

Sorry people! Yes they are 20 inch rims. Here are the images.

Im not sure why they put these on there tbh if it just causes issues.

Maybe I can use the same rims but put 255/35/20 on there?

Full alignment has been done and they are wearing evenly just this rubbing 🤦‍♂️

Car is a 2016 C220d reg is DC08 MBS if anyone wants it i think its classed as a C205. Do we think it will need new rims and tyres? Im really lost and slightly pissed off at the garage for selling me it like this but my fault i guess for not checking 🤦‍♂️

Looking at the second set, it might just pass the test.....but that's no help as far as it rubbing the metalwork of course.

I've had no issues at the MOT so i'd say its just passable but I want to correct it now before I throw money at tyres tbh!

I think they are rubbing on the plastic mudguard I have circled in the picture. Or it could be on the arch itself I'm not sure.

It dosent rub all the time its just over bumps in the road or when the car has rear passengers/luggage! Pain in the **** 😢

I would suggest you want to get rid of the 20” wheels, 17 or 18 would be more appropriate. Check inside the fuel flap or the handbook for what Mercedes have as standard. You should be able to sell the 20s.

Knowledge trumps belief.
If there are - it looks to my eyes that there could be - then a simple solution is at hand.

There will be 'witness marks' where there's rubbing. If only the mudguard, can it be removed? If it's rubbing on steel - corrosion will surely ensue.

Just been to the tyre place that fitted the tyres for me.

The checked springs and shocks and they are fine no issues there.

Front tyres are 235s and they are fine no rubbing.

Regarding the back. They have said stock should be 255 and the alloys that I have are the C63s which clearly dont fit, the mudguard cannot be removed apparently as this is for whistling noises.

I am going back at 3pm they are going to take off the rear alloys and see the spec as to which tyre should be on that rim

If the 275 is the correct tyre for the rim then I have no choice but to change the alloys.

If the alloy should have a 255 then maybe that is the solution however they did say a 255 will be stretched on that rim.

I will update once we know the specs of the alloys, also they will check for spacers to confirm that!

Thanks everyone so far!

I
My guess was it is there as an aerodynamic aid and your response confirms. But, with the wheels out much further than intended the aero will be different than standard where that 'mudguard' would be effective. Maybe, removing it would make little or no difference and, if it effected a cure, a judgement call on whether acceptable or not vs the rubbing. Does the C63 from whence the wheels came have said mudguard?

The C63 does have this, but the wheel size is different, a friend of mine sent me this picture.

Let's see what size the rims are when I go in an hour and I will let you know

Thanks again

Dan

I'm guessing that they are aftermarket as they are 20". I don't think the genuine cross spokes went above 19"

Alloys are 9.5J so I'm wondering if I should put 255s on
