C220D Consumption- disappointingly low!

To give you something to compare to...

For another comparison, my 2008 2.0tdi Passat would give about 42mpg if cruising at 90ish (hypothetically of course) and around 52mpg cruising at 75ish.

Did similar route yesterday and got 45.6 mpg.... Had cruise set at 70-75, so clearly that works.

Sitting at 70 on the M6 Tollroad takes some self-discipline!!!

It's rare to use it and not seem someone stopped by an unmarked police car. The speed some people drive it is insane - not from a danger point of view, but they stick out like the sorest of thumbs and they're going to get banned if caught.

84mph is your problem.

Try doing 70mph and it will be in the 50's you will also arrive more relaxed listening to some tunes on the way.

It makes a huge difference each 5 mph.

I agree 100% amazes me that people as they pay for the road think the law of the land goes out of the window. I came back from 800 miles of french toll roads and drove up the M6 toll in what can only be described as a river it was raining that much.

I stuck at 60mph off cruise (the warning signs were saying 50 !!). Cars were going past as if I was stood still. very odd...one day there time will come.

I've had the E coupe for two years now. In that time I've been done three times by mobile cameras for speeding. Never much over the limit, but speeding none the less. The first time I took the option of speed awareness training and then got three points for each of the two subsequent offences.

I've been driving for 35 years and in that time only got done once about 6 years ago.

I'm currently comparing insurance quotes and find I'm paying an extra £100 for the six points. This premium will remain for 5 years after the points were "awarded". Even after they are removed from the license!

I now set the limiter, or cruise, at 75 and according to my GPS devices am travelling at 72.

I arrive at my destinations slighter later but less stressed and achieve around 44/45 in my 3.0 litre V6.

So YES my friend, a bit of self discipline WILL pay off in the long term!

I've been such a TW*T since I had my car!

going a little of topic, but Its less stressful for me to cruise at 80-90 as you spend the bulk of the time in lane 3. Any slower and you're pissing about changing lanes every minute - well if you're not a middle lane hogger.

I'm sure you'll get the appropriate sympathy should you find yourself saying that whilst in the back seat of a police car.

Each to their own, but this thread is becoming a real eye opener for me.

The M6 toll is made to test the top speed if your car and from the toll the breaking time from top speed and the time taken to get back to top speed :)

I've no idea what you're saying Steve, but I've given you a Thanks for bring a smile to my face anyway :)

I've got to try that road! Maybe I could post one of those 'look how fast my E220 can go!' videos on YouTube.

mo seriously I spent the weekend driving from Dundee to Leicester using all motorways. I set the cruise at 78 mph and was rarely overtaken for the whole route. A few years ago I would have been the slowest on the road at that speed. I was thinking that the cost of fuel has reduced the average speed of traffic.
Jon

Remaining at a constant high speed, the vast majority of the power (and therefore fuel) is used to overcome aerodynamic drag. As we all know, this is proportional to the square of the speed. Increasing your cruise speed from 70 to 86mph will use 1.5 times as much fuel (in theory!)
Don't people do maths or physics anymore??:dk:

Quantitative easing (of the throttle) can be very finacially rewarding.....

PS. I've done some 'cruising' at 200mph (at Nardo!) and was getting 4mpg. That means having to stop for fuel every 20mins...

I topped out my E220 there. I was passing everything hehe.

Agree re cruising speeds. Driving at an indicated 80 means very little passes you, even Audi S line hire car pilots are passed at 80 usually. Before fast motorway progress required a 90 to 100 cruise.

Depends which stress you're most stressed about! I spend years driving everywhere at 90 ish and then got done twice in quick succession, once by an unmarked car and once by a laser camera hidden off to the side of a bridge.

When you realise how easy it is to get done, it's far less stressful to sit at 75 and not have to worry about it.

My 2009 e220 estate is showing up to 50mpg sitting around 70-75 on the motorway, normally around 45 on the clocks, real calculation is 42mpg and improving. (50k miles)

Cruise control isn't where you get efficiency I'm afraid either!

Not sure these blue efficiency engines are any good fr this.

My bluemotion passat did real 58mpg on a 2000 miles trip to the alps and back at steady 80mph on the cruise last year.......

Hello

Had my facelift 220D Sport 125 Ed. Estate (manual!) for 7 weeks now and really chuffed with it so far in every way.... Except consumption.

My actual calculated consumption has been typically 40Mpg across a range of roads. Whilst I am not exactly a 'Sunday Driver', I don't really hoon it around either...

Today, I have done a 380 mile round trip on M6 & A14- with Cruise sat at 84 mph. Have brimmed the car and recorded actual consumption of 42.5mpg.

I am also conscious of comments from C250D drivers of 50+mpg.... I really don't think I could get much more than today's figure.

Should I be having a word with the supplying dealer?

(The car is now on 3.5k- so properly run in)

Do you not think the cruise set at 84 mph might have something to do with it ??

Bang on.
Since air resistance increases with the square of velocity the 42.5mpg at 80mph could well be 54mpg at 70mph.

That's crazy talk. No one achieves the official fuel economy figures ;)
