I've recently had some gearbox problems with my 1999/v C240

Took it to an independent Mercedes specialist yesterday and was advised that it needed a new gear selector module and was quoted over £500 for this to be done. Which i have not got

I'm due to leave the country with work at the turn of the year and need to get this sorted before then.

My options appear to be advertise on Ebay explaining the problem and settling for the best offer i get for the car (apart from this module problem the car is fine, drives perfect, optioned upto the eyeball and is a great car)

or perghaps see if there is a cheaper option or whether an enthusiast maybe interested in purchasing the car

Any ideas or if anyone is interested in buying let me know

we are all interested! where is the car? tell us and you may have interested bidders...

also, what symptoms do you have? give us a little more detail of the fault and diagnosis and we can offer second opinions.

What are the symptoms of the problem that lead to this diagnosis?

Was the £500 inc labour and VAT? Used selectors are available on e-bay

Sorry was a bit vague

Yes price was including Vat and labour nothing on Ebay a the mo was told it had to be a new unit because it has to be coded to the car (only what i was told)

I'm in Romford Essex

Car was unused for about four months battery went flat and i stupidly jump started it(which probably caused a spike)

car drives and you can select park, drive, reverse etc

but will not change up from first gear

On moving from drive to any other gear you have to take your foot off the foot brake to allow the gear selector to move up

The small indicator next to the clock is showing blank

Here is the text of the car and i will try and put some pictures on
It really is a nice car

Hi,
Tiptronic is/was a very rare option in a W202. Sounds a very nice I hope you get things sorted out to your satisfaction.

Andy

I'm guessing i'm right in describing as a tiptronic

Tiptronic is where the selector is in drive and you can move up and down the gears by moving the gearstick left or right

Is that correct?

Wouldn't want to mislead anyone

So used one is going to be difficult to source (even then there's the question of whether they can be recoded) which leaves the OP pretty stuck.

Trying to remember how much sucess people have had stripping them down and cleaning them out after spilling liquids in them. I'm wondering about the possibility of dirty contacts if the car was laid up for a while, might be worth a shot, rather than assuming fried electonics (probably straw clutching)

Oh that don't sound good

Forgot to say earlier when selecting drive the car lurches somewhat (sort of jolts forward)

CLK box is/should be the same, as the 202 i believe, i would of thought any CLK, 202 possibly 210 gear selector module would fit with Tiptronic.

The electrical faults have most likely caused your gearbox problems, a frined had similar issues on a W203, Alternator caused flat battery, repaired elctrical problems, had the codes cleared and the gearbox has been fine ever since.

Thats what i thought

I took it Friday to have the fault codes removed

There were no fault codes though

!! Update now have fault codes Any Stars experts help

I now have print out of the fault codes showing
The reason it appears to be the gear selector module is that all STORED codes were removed but others are showing as CURRENT
I have the report saved as a PDF can anybody advise how i can get it on here
I'm not very good with computers can i PM someone with it who could get it to show on here so i can get some help
Thanks

To me it looks like it needs a new selector module from what the fault codes say but obviously without diagnosing it myself wouldnt say 100% its the selector

Had a quick look on ebay and found this
MERCEDES 210 E /C CLASS AUTO BOX, GEAR SELECTOR MODULE on eBay (end time 24-Dec-09 09:52:25 GMT)

You would need to contact them and check to see if the part number is the same as the one that is requires for your car but it gives you an idea of what is out there

I hope this helps

Hi thanks for replying

unfortunately my selector looks nothing like that

just has p,r,n,d no 4,3,2,1

hi get me a part number

thanks

I was just using it as an example of what is available out there if you were to hunt around.

It seems a sin to sell a car over just a selctor module fault

Hi Brabus

Part number is

1292604698
