went to view a 1998 C240 Sport yesterday.

only 70K Miles and in fantastic condition.

Found 1 thing that worried me

Took off the oil filler cap and found some traces of the the old "Mayo"

Are these V6s prone to head gasket problems or is it likely to be condensation

the car had full service history and ran very smoothly with the temp gauge exactly where it should be

Water in header tank was fine

Is this a "walk away" job

cheers

My experience of the 240's and 280's etc is that they all get mayo in the oil caps......my thoughts are that as the oil cap is at the highest point on the engine....all engines generate an element of condensation which gets burnt off by the oil when its really hot...the problem though is that the condensation collects in the filler cap area and does not get burnt off.

Every 240, 260, 280, or 320 I have seen has it to a certain extent...if they have been prone to short journeys the mayo issue is more pronounced as the engine never gets hot enough to burn off the condensation.

If you're not using coolant, then don't worry about it.

Thanks Vlad

just have to work on his price now !!!

also - what is the real world fuel consumption of one of these (auto)

c13,

My E240 (same engine and gearbox, slightly heavier, more rusty) used to average around 26-29mpg. Best I ever averaged was 34 on a cruise from the Midlands to Bristol.

Hi!

I often find a little mayo under the cap of my car in the winter, is only condensation, nothing to worry about.

I have averaged 30.8 mpg over the last 40000 miles in mine, very good i think for a v6 auto. Around town it can drop to 24 (stuttgart is hilly and has lots of red lights). On a run, i get about 34, with 37 being the highest.

That said, i do not rag it around too much.

Regards
Matt

Mine is mayo free :)

Mine was too this year, incidentally. Wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that it was so much warmer this winter
