Car
Mercedes, Fiat and Ford!
New on here and a bit late to ask, I know but I've just ordered one of these. Nothing in the MB sites about it and only a few reviews on the usual websites. I was compelled by the quoted 201PS, 500NM, 7 sec to 60 and 155MPH (believe that when I see it) top speed. - oh and only 138 CO2

Anyone on here know anything more about it?

Cheers!

Hi, nice to see you here too.

Its engine is the 220cdi but with another turbo. Think its similar in concept to the engine in the 123d. Personally, I'd have spec'd an auto. The rest of the C class gets very good press on here.

WElcome -- look forward to hearing your views on the car when you get it..

Thought seriously about the autobox and not too late to change my mind (if I do it tomorrow) but wifey hates them.......

Thanks for the link Graeme - appreciated

She will love you eventually for getting the auto (think it's a tiptronic so she can pretend it's a manual when needed! :))

The MB autos are a world apart from any other auto I have driven, big style.

Merc manuals are crap, mate had an older c250d and it was as clunky as hell and very sprinter i drive old and new is exactly the same.

Takes very careful throttle and clutch control to get a nice change even worse than a landrover with a worn output shaft gear:D.

Plus without a shadow of a doubt it will hurt the resale value.

As others have said get an automatic if you can. You will find a mercedes difficult to sell/trade without auto when the time comes to change. Unfortunately I have a nagging feeling you can't buy a 250 CDi blue efficiency with a automatic box at the moment?????

Just occured to me - if the new Mercs have the traditional MB foot/handbrake a manual can be somewhat of a challenge! Strongly suggest you have her drive it around a town with a few hills!

It's not so difficult but different. Rather than release the handbrake with your left hand in a conventional car, you have to release it with your right hand in a MB.

But I agree, that if possible, buy the automatic as it makes for a very refined ride.

I had a W204 courtesy car last week with a manual box, I couldn't wait to get rid of it & get my own auto back. Your wife will wonder why she ever drove manuals after a while with a Mercedes auto.

Most car buyers want a mercedes with an auto, so expect a manual to be worth less or harder to shift when you come to sell.

I've driven this with a manual gear box, it wasn't available with an auto box until recently.

Where did you get the performance figures? I would not expect the LHD model being that much different, our figures are:
- top speed 240 km/h (auto and manual),
- 0 to 100 km/h, 7.6 s manual, 6.9 s automatic.

The engine torque is probably limited for the lower gears with the manual transmission.

The engine is great in performance versus fuel consumption but surprisingly noisy at high revs while very OK at low rpms, no vibration even if the torque is that high and only 4 cylinders.

Ah! so the top speed was wrong.... I got the numbers from one of the Uk car magazines which reviewed it all at the back end of last year. Thanks for the correction.

OK what was the manual box like then?

Thanks

I think MB limit torque on the manuals to 400 Nm, certainly so on CLK manual, 512 on auto. Auto boxes can stand more stick, due to the planety gear apparently. some good articles on wikipedia with a full explantion.

Going to get an auto.......... if only to avoid any good natured abuse on here!

Seriously, it makes sense. Thanks everyone.

My wife cant stick manuals, i always had manuals until current car and would not want to go back again, in fact she wouldnt let me have any of her cars to repair them as it would mean driving that crappy slow thing ie my beloved landrover:D.

Best decision ever going for the auto.

It is all up to design, MB manual boxes are usually designed to lower torque, they have not seen enough market for a higher torque version. There are different torque capability versions of the auto tranny too.

The torque rating for the C250CDI appears the same for the manual and the automatic tranny, at least from the MB web site. At least for some models the engine torque has only been limited to the first gear (or a couple of first gears) only because those are the most difficult to dimension for the max torque. In this case the advertised max torque is the true max torque but not the one available with the first gear.

I should have a look at this in detail, perhaps someone has already done it?

I don't think all MB Manuals are bad. They are fine on the A, B and SLK which use convential handbrakes, and I am led to believe the latest boxes on the W204 and W212 are OK combined with the standard fit hill start assist.

I read in a fleet magazine somewhere that demand for the new manual E200 CDI will be strong as people are looking for good fuel economy.

No doubt, but the same buyers will not want leather, comand or any other expensive extras either. That means a lot of "poverty spec" cars to avoid in a few years time on the used car market.

If the C250 has the same manual box as the w204 220CDi, I did not like it at all.
