Hi guys, anyone out there know if you can test the pressure converter on these engines as i am losing most of my power going up hill (won't rev past 3k) and think it may be the problem. Also if a fault code is present in the ECU ie. overboost, will that stop the car from performing and have to be cleared or is it just a message for diagnostic purposes. The car might be in limp home mode.

I take it you mean the boost pressure from the turbo by pressure converter. This can be tested with a simple pressure gauge T'd into the MAP sensor line.

As far as overboost goes it's unlikely but possible if the wastegate is stuck closed although you now appear to have a lack of boost so that can't be it.

More likely is that the MAP sensor is faulty reading overboost.

The over boost fault code is pointing to your problem most likely.

Check all the vacuum pipes first.

As DM says it is not very likely that it it is actually over boosting. Its probably the Map thats causing it.

I thought i read some threads that said my model didn't have a MAP sensor?
If it does what does it look like and where do i find it (no mentioned in Haynes)

It's got a MAP sensor but not a MAF sensor.

There is a small pressure hose leading from the intake manifold to a square sensor.

Sorry, I can't find a picture as referrence.

Thanks for your help guys, i took a photo of what i think is the MAP sensor but i can't send it as a message tells me its too big.Im a bit new to this game.
Also any feedback would be appreciated about the fault codes ie. if i install a new MAP sensor will it work before the codes are cleared or will the problem persist until thats done.

It should work out of the box but it is always prudent to have them erased.

Just spoken to local MB dealer who told me MB-UK have supplied over 350 Map sensors to similar aged cars in the last 12 months so hopefully it will solve my problem. Also it was cheaper (£53 + vat) than substitute part on the net, and even faxed me a picture of it from their parts catalogue.Very helpful.

What age is you c250 harri, no dout this is something that i've got to look forward to

Its a 1997 P reg and has cost me nowt really as i have had it 8 yrs now and all its had is a water pump £40 and a pressure converter £50 about 4 yrs ago oh and new glow plugs.
Its still got the original exhaust!

Sounds like mine - family car for entire life since 97 (R-reg facelift). After some faffing under warranty, it has consumed oil and brakes as expected. Failures are limited to glow plugs, battery, back box, some loose trim....that's about it! Don't forget to lubricate the mono wiper!

I've just bought one 97 p reg 120k, hoping it will be a cheap works/family bus, just sorting out the little bits that need doing, glowplugs, autobox dipstick is broken down the tube, the ariel is not that good so need to look into that one, the single wiper has allready broken, it has a screw in the cover to stop it extending, changed the headlamp bulbs as the standards are quite poor, on osram nightbreakers now which are alot better,

I think you'll find that your car doesn't actually have a dipstick for the gearbox. It should have a tamper-proof cap on the top of the dip-stick tube.

You can buy a new cap for the tube that DOES have a dipstick in it. I don't have the part number to hand.

If its never been touched though it will just have a seal on it which I think once broken off won't go back on.

Mr Walker can put them back on! ;)

funny i thought my dipstick was missing and panicked when i rang the mb dealer, but he said it was just a £2 cap that was missing...phew
