Well, after following threads on poor coolant temp I bit the bullet at the weekend and fitted a new 'stat to the C270Cdi. Genuine part was £44 complete with sender, seal and housing.
Took me an hour and a half (and I withdrew the oil filter to make life easy). Broke a couple of clips, but no drama. I also syphoned coolant and re-used it.
Temp now sits at 85/90C according to the gauge, instead of 70-ish. And the car warms up within 5 miles. I'd just like to thank all those who shared their experiences in previous posts about thermostats, which goes to show how useful this forum, and its members, can be.

Hi, did my stat because of the same reasons you had. it was a very easy job but was amazed when l first spoke to garages about changing it how much cheek sucking l got. Looked up a thread on the site and did it myself!! great knowledge here without the bull sh!t.

And if your experience mirrors mine, you should not only have a better heater, but also see an improvement in MPG. My S203 went from about 42 average (on the trip computer) to over 45 after the stat change! I cheated though - bought the stat from MB but had it fitted by my village garage - £40CIH.

I know. One local muppet quoted me 1.8 hours (and then said call it 2, which pi**ed me off) and he then proceeded to tell me the stat would cost £180+vat. I asked if it was made from unobtainium and he didn't get my drift. I even asked the local MB dealer for a quote but didn't get past "it will need to be put on our diagnostics machine first, which costs £90". Well, they got told too. I would have used Ollie at PCS but I'm not close enough and couldn't swing a trip in his direction, so I resorted to getting my hands dirty this time.

And yes Chris, I'm looking forward to better mpg's too. Happy Days.
