c280, what to expect...

Yes, although we are talking about the W202 C-class here, these other models were facelifted as Malcolm has mentioned - and this included these models. Did the ML come with any other six cylinder petrol engine other than the V6?

I think the 208 CLK and the R170 SLK also only had V6s? :)

Will

That is correct and there could be some more the 350 is the same engine on the ML and SL and could be more

It Will Be A Straight 6 I Suspect.

Why Are We Shouting?

Sorry:o just typing in a hurry. Dont think there will be a head gasket problem if its a V6.:) but there is the crankshaft harmonic balancer problem to be checked  ( see lots of posts about this on the forum) cheap fix but can cause expensive damage if it lets go at high revs. Other faults already mentioned Otherwise just check all the electronic gismos work windows, sun roof, seat adjustment, etc etc. check all the warning lights (1) come up with ign on and (2) go out after you start the engine.

edit sorry I was writing this as if you were a prospective buyer not the owner---but check that HB crankshaft pulley!!!!!!!

Does the balancer show any signs of failing before it does, or is it a case of just keeping an eye on its condition?

Cheers

usually folks complain of noise or vibration from the front of the engine but by that time its probably ready to let go with little warning! Carefull inspection of the rubber layer between the inner and outer parts of the pulley should give aclue to impending failure---see the pics.
