C350 CDI om642 correct engine temperature?

Hi there, Got my E350 cdi W212 a few weeks ago and temperature was not reaching 'normal'. Told garage to change the thermostat and it now runs up to 90 and sits there all day whether in traffic or on a motorway. Believe the guys and gals on the forum and not MB specialist as the people on here have thousands of hours more experience collectively than any mechanic can.

The manufacturers change is 40k miles , maybe that’s why he is surprised ?
They also have hugely extended oil service intervals. Totally up to you guys if you want to change your oil every 18000 miles and your air filter every 40000
i don't think many of us here would wait that long.

The air filter seems a really long time to me.....mind you with the price of a pair of OM642 filters I can see why some are tempted on these old cars. Not me....I dont do many miles in my own cars now.....so they will be checked annually.....if they look like my pants after a day of wearing Id change them......if not they say for another year....like the pants!!!! Would not want filters older than three years old though....even though that's less than 20K for me.

Think my 2 are close to £90 from mb.

A swift few clouts off a wall and a good hoover would get another year from those orange panel filters.Screenshot_20250313-114427.png

20 k miles is a long time to be in use for the air filters so I’m surprised you were surprised they were dirty !

You’ll never get a better mpg until you do a long drive on a motorway. 30 minutes just isn’t enough time plus the car has taught itself your driving routine running around for 30 minutes.

I've replaced lots of filters, never seen them that black after 18 months but if others reckon so I believe them

My 250 cdi is the same if I’ve been around the doors for a while. Once I get on a run for over a couple of hrs cruising it gets back to its usual 50 plus mpg

My 350 cdi after a couple of hours of 70 mph cruising will show about 48 mpg depending on traffic conditions - but that's the dashboard readout 🙃, if you believe your dashboard readout then I have some magic beans to discuss with you ;) . My reckoning is the readout needs about 15 % knocking off to get to the true brimmed tank to tank calculation, so you're getting more like a real 42-45 mpg, which is still very good to be fair.

Exactly - if they were 1/4 bunged up at 20k I'd suggest they'd throw all sorts of codes at 40k...

That's my experience too -- 90° when wwarmed up and stays at 90 regardless of driving situation. I average 40 to 45mpg on motorways and in London barely get more than 20mpg. It's an 8 year old OM642 engine in a e350d Estate (S213)

If you have the same engine as me then I believe you get 40-45 mpg on the dashboard, because that's exactly what I do So knock off 15 % and that's 34-38 mpg real figure, exactly the same as me, which is reassuring.

The trouble with comparing mpg is that hardly anyone bothers to calculate it tank brim to tank brim... its too depressing when you realise your pride and joy has been lying to you all along 😆

I'd go along with that 100%

Although, as the engine has ~2x the oil capacity of a typical engine, maybe it is logical that the oil will last longer ?

Mines usually only about 1 to 2 percent off the dash figure when I measure tank top to tank top..... which is why I don't bother any more!
