20 k miles is a long time to be in use for the air filters so I’m surprised you were surprised they were dirty !
You’ll never get a better mpg until you do a long drive on a motorway. 30 minutes just isn’t enough time plus the car has taught itself your driving routine running around for 30 minutes.
I've replaced lots of filters, never seen them that black after 18 months but if others reckon so I believe them
My 250 cdi is the same if I’ve been around the doors for a while. Once I get on a run for over a couple of hrs cruising it gets back to its usual 50 plus mpg
My 350 cdi after a couple of hours of 70 mph cruising will show about 48 mpg depending on traffic conditions -
but that's the dashboard readout
, if you believe your dashboard readout then I have some magic beans to discuss with you

. My reckoning is the readout needs about 15 % knocking off to get to the true brimmed tank to tank calculation, so
you're getting more like a real 42-45 mpg, which is still very good to be fair.
The manufacturers change is 40k miles , maybe that’s why he is surprised ?
Exactly - if they were 1/4 bunged up at 20k I'd suggest they'd throw all sorts of codes at 40k...
That's my experience too -- 90° when wwarmed up and stays at 90 regardless of driving situation. I average 40 to 45mpg on motorways and in London barely get more than 20mpg. It's an 8 year old OM642 engine in a e350d Estate (S213)
If you have the same engine as me then I believe you get
40-45 mpg on the dashboard, because that's exactly what I do So knock off 15 % and
that's 34-38 mpg real figure, exactly the same as me, which is reassuring.
The trouble with comparing mpg is that hardly anyone bothers to calculate it tank brim to tank brim... its too depressing when you realise your pride and joy has been lying to you all along
