c43 Gearbox Problems - Locking Out / Slipping

Hi there,

yesterday my gearbox started playing up with the following problems:

1. When I pulled away from a roundabout the box jammed in second gear. When I accelerated it would not change up and I could not over-ride it with the tiptronic. I had to pull over, switch the engine off and restart and it seemed fine.

2. Then later on on the same journey i was overtaking. When the box went to kick down out of 5th, it went into neutral and jammed and again I could not over-ride or select any gear with the tiptronic, so had to freewheel to a standstill at the side of the road, switch off the engine and start again. This happened again later on the same journey.

I had the gearbox oil changed less than a year ago and have never had any other probs with the gearbox.

Any thoughts as to what the cause of this could be? Thanks in advance.

always start with checking the oil level before going into expensive diagnostics.

I would agree - get the oil level checked. My C43 gearbox used to odd things and it turned out to be oil levels. Always got it topped up once a year regardless and all my problems went away...

Thanks for that - I have booked it in to be checked out however that isn't for another 2 weeks.

Sounds like a possible controller plate issue. I'd get the error codes read.

My C43 gearbox can behave as if its not engaged if i accelerate hard at about 5-10mph and then suddenly it engages and the car launches itself down the road. Its like its between 1st & 2nd. My g/b oil was changed less than 5000 miles ago at MB World. I would love to cure this as the most fun can be had from nailing the gas at 5-10mph Sometimes I catch it right for a perfect takeoff, usually when the cars warmed up.

Would a software upgrade help this problem?

Maybe thats a clutch?

Put the selectopr in D on the console,

Uncouple the linkage underside of the selector

Put the gearbox in D by hand

And then see if the linkage has drifted so that it needs adjusted.

Sounds like a linkage position problem and one which is done according to the mentioned steps.

There was a post a while ago, iirc was howards 430 with gearbox probs and turned out to be engine mounts, think blackc55 sorted it.
