There have been a few threads on this subject and the reality is it depends on where you set the benchmark before it's compared to where we are now.
Selling more of a brand isn't ruining it, it's good marketing, in fact it's sound business practice.
If it's considered being watered down, then technically that happened when MB bought a controlling stake in AMG in 1990 eventually taking it over in full in 2005. As before that a fully mechanical AMG cost more than a new Aston Martin or Bentley and was an exclusive bespoke vehicle. Realistically we're talking north of £250K today as an entry level.
Now you buy an A45 AMG for a reasonable monthly payment pretty much anywhere in the country.
Question:- Is an A45 AMG a genuine AMG and do you consider that ruining the brand?
Is a C450 AMG lower, higher or on the same peg as an A45 AMG or GLA45 for that matter?
If AMG owners are going to be so snobbish, should we have different sections for every level of MB? For instance, why should I with my C350 petrol have anything to do with the obviously inferior C220 diesel plebs? And as for A-class minions, should they even be allowed anywhere near this forum? How about password entry for each of the 50 or so sections we'd probably need so that we can ensure no interlopers?
Anyway, I like the sound of the C450AMG. If it comes without that stupid iPad stuck on the dashboard I'd be seriously tempted. Some sophisticated power in a 4WD saloon without sacrificing comfort sounds good to me. I've always considered the "true" AMG completely wasted in anything other than more blatantly sports cars. SL great, even the SLK55 is lovely, but why anyone wants all that noise and rock hard suspension in a saloon, estate or even coupe is beyond me. But that's their choice. As said earlier, something a bit more practical has to be the best solution. I'm sure I could keep up with any "real" AMG on British roads without driving illegally, and without having my ears and backside tormented. The C450AMG would probably leave most standing when we have a bit of snow!

The question is why didn't they call it C45AMG, since it has some (if not all) of the suspension parts and a detuned 63 engine.
I've driven it in saloon and estate. on track and on the open road
What's the power and engine type on these
,it does sound quirky .
When it snows i will use my golf r and blow out the guy who bought a c450
casts fishing rod!
My Golf R is running Stage 2+ so it blows my C63 out up to 160. If you don't know what Stage 2+ is youtube a few videos. Here is one... Not mine though

So yeah blows out a 450
And it's also listed on the American AMG website with all the other AMG's so it must be one!
Mercedes-AMG
But it wouldn't blow a 1985 Ford Capri running a 5.7 blower and NOS. Which is about as relevant as your example.
I was of the understanding we were discussing specs of vehicles as they left the factory, not once they'd been "Max powered".
Also Americans are king of branding so i wouldn't listen to much to them. If it was an AMG it would have the markings on the back, plus brake set up etc...
Car and Driver
This looks like exactly what BMW did with the M5 and 550i
I have a feeling it does have a similar brake set up as the C63, as well as suspension and steering. That's why I asked if anyone actually had any factual information about it.
No there is a difference between Max Powered and tuning your car, big difference.... So lets not get into that argument. You will loose that especially in this forum..
Even so the weight of the mercedes is more and the 4wd system from VW/Audi is superior to that of Mercedes
However just to be clear, this thread is discussing the vehicles as they left the factory and if they are considered genuine or non genuine AMG branded vehicles. So far it's been a reasonable conversation and it would be good if it managed to stay that way.
I'm posing what I see as pertinent questions.
I see the clear argument that a 220 diesel should be carrying AMG badges, I get where people are coming from on that front. But I find these new 450 models a grey area. I feel there's enough AMG DNA in them for them to have a reasonable claim to the badge.
Lets not go all Pistonheads about this shall we. Plenty of room over there to throw you're Remapped Golf R around.
