I've been having a few issues with the oil volume system. Last week the car threw both the usual add 1 l and then very quickly add 2l in red. Odd as it hadn't given anything for a while but this one does like a drink unlike the e55 which never asked for it.
Anyway I added the required amount and all was well for a day before I got a oil sensor failure error and even one for change oil. Odd I thought. I'd even checked the oil level on the dash before setting off for the day and it said fine barely 30mins before the sensor went down. Maybe
I have a dipstick which whilst I'm not absolutely sure it is the "correct" one the levels have pretty well correlated by with the dash gauge. Using said dipstick suggested I was rather overfilled, not good. So I with drew a litre via the dipstick hole. I'd bought a cheap aldi oil pump a while ago so was pleased to have it but it is very slow.
Checked the dipstick again and better, maybe still a bit high. Ran the car, still asking for a litre or 2 randomly. The hidden dash gave a volume of between 4 and 6.2l! Hmmm.
So I withdrew another litre and the level looks better now and I have used the car without any errors for a couple of days. Just checked the level and the dash says fine and the volume measure is up to 7.7 l. Hmm not sure I believe it.
I wouldn't have thought a sensor could be intermittent but maybe but it needs changing clearly. Sadly from MB the part is NLA or at least out of stock for a good while. There are pattern parts but I have found another part no which MB Newcastle have confirmed is correct (but also NLA new) but ebay came up trumps. Car needs servicing in about 5k miles so a while yet, I keep checking the dipstick I think.
Does everyone still use Mobil1? It is good stuff but quite pricey. Any other options, it can't be the only decent product out there.

Get the MB branded 5w/40 oil from MB Newcastle. 229.5 spec.
It's what the dealers use as well as many indy's.

Enough in this offer for an oil change and a few top ups.

I'm not sure they do....sure, it's what they sell to the public....but our local main dealer does not put it in unless requested. Like most dealers they buy, in bulk, whatever is offered by the reps, that meets the approved spec, at the best price. It's delivered in bulk and put in a big tank and then pumped out when required into jugs or directly into the car via lines around the workshop. Exactly the same as we used to do when I worked for Audi VW 30 plus years ago. We used to use a system that looked a bit like this...

If you say so.
I had my E63 serviced at both MB Loughton and MB Poole and both used MB branded oil as shown on the invoices.
At one time Petronas was used, and I'll take your word that other Mercedes dealers use other brands than MB/Petronas such as Shell Helix and Mobil 1.

The fact is, MB branded oil from MB Newcastle/Edinburgh is a good deal for price and quality. The OP is happy anyway.

Or give your local MB parts dept a call and ask how much the oil is - I have found that it is even cheaper than the ebay shop - hardly surprising as they have to pay the cost of shipping.
MB oil from the dealer parts counter has been very good value for years.

From Mercedes website ..

Mercedes-Benz main dealers use genuine Mercedes-Benz engine oil, as well as other brands that meet Mercedes-Benz specifications:

...and at US main dealers it's almost universally Mobil 1.

OP , immediately Drain the oil (both sumps) replace the level sensor , oil and filter .

Do not mess with oil levels on a C55 M113 engine as they burn oil.

Most importantly there is no indication of engine oil pressure on the dashboard , none. If it runs low it blows up.

I always get my oil and filters from MB Newcastle , cheap and convenient . At 153K miles I am doing oil changes at 5K now , it's cheap insurance.
