Running in my new C63

When I collected my car last week I asked the dealer for any advice on how to run in my new pride and joy but I didn't really get a proper answer. He just smiled at me and said "just make sure the engines warm!"

So, now that I've done 550 miles...and I have been very sensible, most of the time! - ok, occasionally!! - alright then once!!...well it's really hard to drive it slow :D does anyone have any further advice on running-in!?

Clog it up a steep hill to seat the rings properly. High load not high revs.

If it were mine and I was planning to keep it. Not above 70 mph or 3000revs for the first 1000 miles then change the oil.

Must be difficult in a car that probably gets to the speed limit in 6 seconds :)

Enjoy

If it were mine I'd make sure it got as much variation in driving conditions as possible, and I'd definitely make sure it vists every single rpm in the rev range so its free'er.

I am very against driving any car softly, it will do more harm than good.

If it were mine I would have read the sticker on the window that the dealer should have put in.

If it is mine, it will be in the back of the book now, as it was run in as per instructions.

Something about, no full throttle, no revs to exceed 4500, not above 85mph...can't remember the rest. it was either 1500miles of 1500km...

anyhow. they should have told you what to do.

if you have the PPP, or the LSD, they will have told you when the oil in that needs a change too.

Thanks for all the advice guys...I perhaps should have checked earlier, but i notice that there is another thread regarding this on the forum. Similarly, it seems there is no definitive answer - just experiences, opinions and guidelines.

I think it slightly odd that when you consider that AMG is a specialised performance product (not to mention expensive) that MB don't offer more specific support in the form of AMG owners manual.

But then maybe that's the answer...there is no right way to run in an AMG engine, just lots of wrong ways AMG or not!!

Ok, so sensible driving, no max throttle, no max rpm, don't labour engine, etc.

I certainly won't be nannying it but I can't wait to get it beyond 1,500k :thumb:

It's an ****** engine, not some special piece of space dust...

What is all the AMG snobbery on here now?

Generally all over this forum now, e.g. in this thread why should MB produce a special owners manual for AMG cars and why should there be special running in for AMG engines.

These are just normal cars with normal engines Guys, they aren't racing cars or space shuttles...

As a result of this, I've just calculated the Bmep of a C63 engine, at 9.38 it's a low performance engine. Compare that to a 320cdi with a Bmep of 17.8.

Just to check, I've just calculated the Bmep for a 1980's Honda Crx Vtec... 1.6 litre n-asp engine...10.85, and for a Yr 2000 Integra Type-R that figure rises to 11.8, which is 25% better output than the C63.

Am I the only one missing what is so special about AMG63 cars?

you got a love those marketing guys eh! :)

Not as much as MB love the ones that fall for their waffle.

I suspect the production cost of a C63 is less than 10% greater than a 320cdi if that, the sale price is double, the after-sale cost even greater.

The power of marketing...;)

I suspect it's not JUST marketing.. :)))
However, I've yet to fall under the spell as I really wouldn't know when to use the power! When I had a seriously powerful car a few years ago I ended up driving around on 9 points, scared to exceed ANY speed limits!

AMGs are great if you have access to a track, (or German autobahns!) but if not, I don't see the point..
