C63 AMG...running in!?

I was told to wait till the engine gets to 80 degrees before even revving the engine

Thanks Mercman786, I've been keeping an eye on the oil temp and 80deg is the point that the digital readout turns from blue to white. It seems to run at around 105deg under 'normal' running!

This is a very strange thread, with non AMG members having a pop at AMG. :dk:

Anyway, if I'd spent that much on my pride and joy I'd seek all available advice to ensure I was running it in correctly (though I'd start with the handbook).

I'm sure when you're whipping those c500 horses with that big smile on your face, you won't really give a sh*t what others think - go enjoy, I know I would :thumb:.

It's not that John, it's this idea that because it's an AMG it's like no other automobile on the road, mechanically speaking.

Hence DM's post about it not being space dust....

AMG 63’s are very very special cars and they should be taken care of…

My advice would be to drive it sensibly for at least 1K and follow what the book says and you should be fine and just enjoy the beast! :)

What's Bmep? Is the higher figure better?

If so can anyone tell me if I ran in my C320 CDi correctly? :D

No worries John, I was just simply seeking advice from some possibly more experienced MB owners on the forum. My comment below refers to the fact that the C-Class owners manual that came with the car doesn't offer much in the way of specific advice to running-in the AMG engine!

"I think it slightly odd that when you consider that AMG is a specialised performance product (not to mention expensive) that MB don't offer more specific support in the form of AMG owners manual."

It actually offers the following bullet points;
  • do not drive at speeds above 140 km/h for the first 1,500 km
  • only allow the engine to reach a maximum engine speed of 4,500rpm briefly.

anyway sounds like I should have bought a Honda...a proper car with a proper high performance engine :wallbash:

Bmep...B/S more like! - Smiles per miles that's what an AMG product is all about :D:D

There should be a clear sticker in your windscreen with very small print on it. Mine was in the top right hand corner and it has the running-in instructions.

As you say, no more than 4,500 rpm and 80mph for the first 1200 miles. Stick to that and you're engine will be fine. It has a 3-year warranty so don't worry about it, and have fun!

Have a top-up bottle of oil ready too, you may well need it for the first 10,000 miles.

Ignoring the AMG envious bell ends and getting back to the point.

I have to say it is all in the handbook, albeit hard to find. And yes it does specifically state different running procedures for 'AMG Variants' as they are different.

Look and eye shall find.

The AMG's are hand built and are pre run in put 1000 miles on it then drive it
like a getter way car you will need new underpants though lol, so take a spare pair with you !
Trust me you wont do any harm to the engine these are bullet proof

Enjoy

Best regards
Clive

Why is it envy? Do you think that anyone who doesn't want an AMG is just jealous of those who have one?? That's utter cr*p and you know it.. Some people just don't feel the need for one - speed and power isn't what everyone wants you know.

^ pretty sure I cannot fit a towbar to one also :)

I'm more than happy seeing over 40mpg and 95% of my Journeys I have more than enough power already.

It must actually be quite annoying sometimes as they are quick, on a normal road your never going to get near the performance.

Then as a track car they are not set up for track use so bar the brut power they will not be that good. I was amazed how properly set up track cars handle / perform over and above 'normal' cars on a track.

Its a good job we are all differnet at the end of the day, I still like looking at the AMG cars and hearing them as they give it beans but as mentioned its not envy? I'm sure more on here could have them if we wanted it just doesn't suit our needs.

unless there are news i didnt hear..

I would expect the engine to be run in before you getting the car but otherwise id say, warm it up, CANE it!

The only thing in a modern engine that needs 'running in' is the piston rings, nothing else is designed to wear. The cylinders are honed to make them slightly abrasive and make sure the rings wear a bit to get correctly seated in the bores. The only way to do this is to load the engine. If you dont load the engine there wont be enough pressure behind the rings to wear them in, the bore will glaze over and there will never be a pefect seal between ring and cylinders. this will cause blow by with loss of performance and contamination of engine oil as a result.

the main reason manufacturers recommend 'breaking in' is to make sure new owners in vehichles they arent used to go out and do something silly. And also to make sure everything else is bolted together correctly

Then why attack those that have at every opportunity?
Who's attacking? Just some guys expressing a view, slightly contrary to those that worship at the altar of AMG.

Personally, I'm glad those cars exist. I'm glad Lamborghini, Ferrari, Aston et al exist, but I don't necessarily want one. Horses for courses and all that! :)

Give me 3 (or 4!) litre diesel power and comfortable ride (and the cool shape of a CLS!) and I'm happy. Gone are the days I want to scream around on the edge on a public road. Comfort, looks and "sensible" power with economy for me, every time.

No, to sum it up - I like 'em, I just don't want one. :)

Anyway, how do you run 'em in? :)

Are AMG engines really hand made or is that just an urban myth?

People who slate AMG's are the ones who more likely never owned one.

Nothing wrong with member with 63 AMG’s or whatever showing off their pride and joy that they worked HARD for? it's not about bragging rights!
That’s what makes this forum interesting; you have a variety of topics about more or less everything!

Personally I'd much rather look at images& read about AMG's than read about some boring topic like mpg etc.. lol.:D
