If it wasn't for an innocent looking sticker on the inside of my windscreen then my new car would have failed to follow the correct service guidelines right from the start of it's life...and mainly thanks to the lack of knowledge from MB dealers!!

My C63 has the AMG Performance Pack meaning it has a limited slip diff. It appears that cars with this option require the diff oil to be changed at around 1,800 miles 'to avoid excessive wear' (??).

Was I told about this at any point during my purchase or handover of the car?

No!!

Now, compare that to when I bought a new BMW M3; the dealer practically wanted to tattoo me with the mileage that it needed it's first (and FREE) service!

However, I can hardly blame the salesperson who I bought the car from as it seems that theres a general lack of knowledge from MB dealers that this service is required on cars with the AMG PP fitted.

Not only did the sales department of the supplying dealer not know anything about it, but when I enquired at the service dept of my local MB dealer in Loughborough about the cost of this oil change, they also hadn't heard of any such service ever being required. After some investigation on their part, they came back to me confirming that my car would indeed need the service and that I was the first person in that dealer to ever ask about one! They are also going to relieve me of 140 notes to do the work

This seems odd to me that the dealers have so little knowledge of this and goes to show that it's likely there are other cars out there which are still using the diff's 'running-in' oil!

I wonder how this would impact a warranty claim if a diff went faulty and the oil change had not being done??

£140 ????

Mine only cost £100. I would query that.

It takes less than 30 mins to do and as far as I'm aware only needs doing once.

Fairly easily.

Plenty of E56 M3's around that needed a 1200 mile running in service that didn't get it. BMW from memory did use this to invalidate warranties.

Good job you got it done :thumb:

Thanks M....very useful info ;) I will certainly be challenging my local dealer!

Out of interest, which dealer did you use for this and did they tell you about it or was it up to you to find out?

Yes dealers maybe should know, but MB should also better inform them or send relevant highlighted info with the car for the dealer to discuss on handover.
Guess the 'sticker' covers them

How much is a litre (?) of LSD oil and 1/2 hour's labour then?

Or are they charging for an hour's labour minimum now?

Will

Its not just oil though its oil for an AMG........

All prices seem to attach a hiden premium for these models....

I would certainly try for a freebe.

I used Sytner in Kettering where I bought the car from new, sadly no longer there now. The Northampton dealer has taken over. I was told about it when I visited the AMG factory and similar to you I had a window sticker top right as you look out informing me of the need for the oil change...

When I bought the car I really wanted the LSD but not the PP, it is now a standalone option which I managed to get.

I did ;) did not get it though...:(

Mark.

£140 sounds about right to me. 0.6 hours labour, plus oil and drain and refil plugs.

Hey buddy.

Damn, well spotted!

I wouldn't have known that either.
I was hoping that mine had the limited slip diff, but after some research, I was told that this was not taken as part of the package on my vehicle. Kinda glad in a way, if it needs looking at every 1800 miles.( however, I did get the entertainment system upgrade though! heehee).

Anyway, just thought I'd also say:

It's worth remembering that only the Dealerships inside the M25 and in Birmingham are genuine MB dealers. The rest are just franchises.
I only found this out myself about a year ago.

This may explain why you may get gimpy service in the non-genuine dealerships.

Get the number to your nearest genuine dealer and use them for technical info.

By the way, "excessive wear" on the diff I'm sure will only apply to you track your car or nut it everytime you drive it.
But still, get it looked at when you're supposed to though.

Rashman! It doesn't need looking at every 1,800 miles (at least I hope not!) :D It apparently comes with a 'running in' oil that needs to be flushed out and changed for 'proper' stuff at 1,800 miles and then it just follows the normal service intervals.

Yes, you're right....the MB dealer I bought the C63 from was MB Central Birmingham; a 'proper' MB owned dealership. My local one in Loughborough is a franchise but TBH, they also seem just fine (and are right opposite where I work so are VERY handy).

Haha, oh, I get ya.
That's not bad.
Like you say, good job you noticed the 1800 mile fluid change though eh?!

Yeah, the rest of the MB outlets are ok I guess.

But for the love of good don't EVER go near their "approved bodyshops".
Seriously, I mean it.

I had a monumental nightmare with one of these about 2yrs ago with my old 208.

I won't go into all that but be warned.

But I trust you will be very careful with your new baby!

...and Manchester.

You can distinguish an MB Retail dealer from a franchised dealer from their official name and web address:

mercedes-benzlondon
mercedes-benzbirmingham
mercedes-benzmanchester

versus

mercedes-benzofloughborough
mercedes-benzofsheffield
mercedes-benzofedinburgh

Supposedly MBUK - then DCUK - wanted to control the dealerships in the main cities to make sure that the demands of running a high profile dealership in a major city were met.

Nothing to do with profit. Promise.

Something tells me that Inchcape, Pendragon, etc know a bit about running automotive dealerships.

Back to this damn diff oil change that hardly anyone has heard of!

I went back to my supplying dealer (MB Central Birmingham) a couple of weeks ago to get a new tyre and enquired about said oil service. Even their senior technician had no idea what it was but said as it had a sticker in the window, I should get it done.

Baring in mind I was quoted £140 from MB Loughborough I was all the more surprised to be told that "we'll do that in about 20 minutes and the oil's only £15...so let's call it £45+vat"

Lovely....almost made up for the extortionate cost they charged me for the tyre!

Well surely something must be wrong if the price differences are that drastic. Just make sure they know what they are doing as the senior technician didn't have a clue what you were talking about in the first place...

On the subject of price differences between MB dealers, MB Swindon quoted £370 for a transmisson fluid and filter change (with their 20% discount for older car applied) and MB Birmingham quoted £250 for the same job with no discount applied :dk:.

Both dealers appeared to pluck the price from out of the air as opposed to any kind of service menu. Frustrating that their is no consistent approach on prices or discount structure.
