Hi there,

Had a major service at MB yesterday and about 13 miles into the drive home I lost powersteering (on a roundabout) and the battery light came up shortly afterwards.

Got the car recovered and when I opened the bonnet I could see the belt was shredded to pieces. The car is only 2.5 years old and covered under warranty but just wanted to know if this was common - from what I can see it's not. Car has done just over 40k miles.

Thanks.

Allegedly this is a service item at some point

Thanks for the replies, yes it was also a seized idler pully that was at fault here too.

I'd be questioning how thorough the inspection/service was. These items should be checked.

I did think the same to be honest but then again surely an idler pulley would have gone from working to seized with no stage in between? I would imagine as soon as it does seize it would shred the belt in seconds? Although it was only 13 miles after serivce, it was in London traffic so about an hour. Debatable whether it could have been fine or not when it left the garage... What do you think?
