Folks
Lost the sale of my car this morning due to them spotting a slight oil leak running down from the back of the engine on to the heat sheild. Now a few weeks ago I had the rocker cover changed as I was getting still getting a oil burning smell which was indeed the oil running down on to the heat shield. Took it back to the specialist who said a screw at the back was loose. so he tightened it but no joy. Took it back last week and he said that it was oil running up one of the screws and so he silconed the screw and put it back in and told me to stop being paranoid. Well there is nothing paranoid about the smell which is constant and the visible trickle of oil running down from the back. I am fed up with taking it back so a question or 2..

Could this be that the new cover isnt sitting correctly? If I want to do the rocker cover myself can I? Any posts (and I have searched!) with details?

I am bloody fed up of smelling like a cigar every morning and the car wont sell as prospective buyers can smell the oil.

Thanks

Scumbag had a similar problem. Not sure the fix was posted but obviously it shouldn't happen.
The gasket should stop any leak.

Make sure the engine breather is working properly to release any pressure.

Thanks dieselman..im just bloody annoyed and fed up and feel guilty in a sick way of taking it back..if he wanted to fix it he would have done..

Whats the engine breather?..air filter?

More importantly , replace the gasket / seal with everything nice and clean and most importantly don't horse everything up too tight befor you start , it just isn't necessary .

It does sound like it needs a new gasket..

The breather is hoses part item 143 in the second diagram on THIS page.

Are you talking about the 55?
If you are the Rocker cover has no gasket. Only sealant. It is special stuff from MB and is excellent.

I use it all the time and NEVER have any problems with it.

Is your specialist using the correct sealant?

I believe all of the 112 and 113 engines are built without any gaskets only the black sealant.

So what are the gaskets in the previously listed diagram? Items 17 and 23.

Thanks C55..there defo does appear to be a gasket..black rubber type etc.

Its an odd situation as it doesnt appear to be leaking all the time..when im driving i cant smell anything..stop at lights and the oil burning smell is back. Especially bad from cold..any clues? After i lost the sale this morning I took off the 2 plastic air filter pipes, the air filter housing and ran the engine for 10 minutes. not a drop! Took it for a drive came back and checked again..sure enough there was the small oil stream on the gasket.

Thanks

It sounds like the gasket is either trapped or split. Fit a new one.

yes will try that this week.

good diagram and yes I can see the breather pipe..how do i check its working correctly?

Thanks again

Basically just make sure it can vent into the manifold without restriction.

Sorry I did not write it clearly enough. The upper part of the rocker is sealed by the sealant and is not shown on the diagram.

I wrote it without reading it properly. My fault.:( The head gaskets and the rocker cover are the only gaskets on the engine. That is what I was supposed to write.

Old thread....but v useful. I'm planning on changing the rocker gaskets on my C43 (oil weep is now a steady trickle).

Olly - Do I need to use the black sealant along with the gasket? If so, is it an MB-only product and is there a part number?

Any other advice/experience would be most welcome,

Thanks,

Mike

Old post - but relevant. I have searched for updates and other posts - but no luck.
Looking for either a blowout diagram or instructions for removing both rocker covers (Cam or Valve cover) in my Diesel CLS 320 CDI 642 engine (06 model).

Any help with be appreciated, as well as any gotchas, and showstoppers that I need to be aware off.
