Can't get CDI injector out!

Luck, what's that?

So a week on and injector #2 is leaking everywhere and making a sticky mess of my nice new cam cover, so now I get to do it again, this time I hope it just lifts out, washer and all!

Nooooooo!!! Still.... practice makes perfect. I bet you have the injector out before I can say, "super-calor fragilistic-ishbee alidoshus!!!

Is it out? :)

Good luck, and take care,
John

I know its abit late, but have seen these buggers in cdi engines, what i was told was to heat the engine up and that can loosen the injector plus a guy with huge arms to wack the slide tool to remove it!!!!

Oh no not again.
Hopefully you will just pull this one without problem. Try Coke on the injector seat before even attempting to pull it.

Good luck.

try stella for you and coke for the car lol lol
good luck
petrol your next car ???????

:o It must be tempting for petrol to be introduced to this car!! Nudge, nudge, wink wink! :) :)

Hi John,
Have you removed it yet? :D

Have a nice day,
John

I am in the process of changing all glow plugs on my ML270. They were all successfully removed by loosenning them and then filling them up with brakecleaner from an aerosol can. It worked on all. Unfortunately I broke No 1 plug off at the top of the thread. Any light on how to remove this will be appreciated

The problem usually stems from combustion gases blowing by a weak seal at the injector tip. This creates the horrible black gunge that builds up around the injector and traps it in the recess.
I don't think any grease would stop this as it isn't due to electrolytic corrosion, but sealing the copper washer with the proper sealant is imperative.

This is all caused by the design of the common rail injetors. Due to requiring the high pressure fuel connections to connect to the rail the injector has to be able to sit at the correct position, as opposed to being screwed in until tight.
The fixing method is to clamp the injector body but through the ages this method of fixing has always resulted in blow-by after a while.

If anyone intends to keep a CR diesel it would probably pay to have the injectors and glow plugs removed and refitted at each service. I know this incurs cost but it is a lot cheaper than a stuck injector or plug.
Hi Diesel man, I saw your posting from some while back about the injector, i had the injector refitted with a new seal two months back and now its leaking again :( I saw on your post about the sealant, what is it? and where can I get it from? also the seat grinding tool is this avalable for joe public? Any help would be appreciated.

thanks in advance S. Chagger.

The sealant is available from your dealer.
I doubt the seat will require grinding.

Hi, thanks for responding. :) could you provide the part number or is this a generic item I can obtain from Mercedes? thanks.

The dealer will know it.

hi i have the same problem with my ml 270 cdi the garage has the car 9 days and are now talking about taking the head off to remove the injector do you think your method would work on this john john 98. they have tried everything else including liquid nitroegn

I saw an excellent extraction tool on ebay a while back. It screws in on top and forces it out. I think it was 150 quid.

I saw this old post and a few old tricks came to mind from my days on earth moving machines.
If we got a stuck injector we would slacken the clamping bolts and run the engine, if things got desperate, there was always an upper injector cover that could be removed to allow an extractor to be fashioned from another scrap injector, this usually ended up as a sliding hammer type tool. The ability to thermally cycle the engine was the key though. Once the injector moves the area increase and it pops out.
On the CDI one could slacken the injector clamp, re-plum the fuel supply to the new replacement injector that is not installed, and without the control plug this will act as plug. This should allow you to run the engine and some thermal cycles/shocks would help. Also the black gloop is highly soluble in acetone, and little else from my experience, VERY flammable though… You will want to change the oil once you’re done too.
In my book the special tool are worth their weight in blood sweat and beers!!!

I think without reading back that blackc55 did run a car with the bolt out and lost the injector ! Ha ! Why does acetone work ? And.. another injector ...can u draw a pic i can't picture the idea at all

The common rail feed to the stuck injector need to be plugged for the engine to run hence the additional injector that I am assuming is available, a brazed up injector pipe or cap/plug would work just as well. This will also allow the stuck injector to be turned moved, but only if it can not be shot out, i.e. clamp in place but loose!!!!!

I have just had to clean up a CDIs mess and found that none of my usual solvent will touch this black residue except acetone, which works well. It will dissolve the gum allowing the penetrating oils to get to the carburised material down the injectors bore. Its got to worth a try, it beats smashing the rocker cover from around the injector!!!

As an experiment I just put a chunk half the size of 1/2 sugar cube of this residue into a teaspoon of acetone and in 1/2 hour it has dissolved with a gritty liquor remaining!

Doh , too much beer. I c what u mean. I still feel so lucky, even though i stupidly broke m y rocker cover, my inj seems to have come free with relative ease. The carbon was inches thick but the inj came out not too bad compared to people having to smash etc.
