Can't Stop looking at 'Winter' 4x4's!

Those chrome arches only mean one thing...

Call me biased but my money would be with the Discovery. For 5000 you could have your pick of Discovery 2's and although mine is a TDI I think the V8's are fantastic (bit thirsty but we are not talking high mile useage here). The ML is a good looking car though, just not my cup of tea.
Not too sure but I would have thought the time to buy is sooner rather than later. When the bad weather comes there may be an added premium. :dk:

I found myself looking at Vauxhall Frontera's and Mitsubishi Pajero's today

Buy some snow chains and spend the balance on prostitutes......

If it were my money on a cheap winter 4x4 I would be looking at jeep Cherokees. Very comfy, nice place to be. Lot of car and very cheap. Very juicy too!

Jay has a nice one on his website. Its a bit older than, possibly, the O/P was looking for but ticks all the boxes for a cheap reliable winter car. Agree that 4.0 is quite thirsty (not in the same league as V8 Disco though)

Ml320 on autotrader for under £1000. Crazy. Guess they are getting old now.

ML500's seem much cheaper than the ML270's yet tend to be much better equipped with full leather, Comand etc and also generally have low miles. I've been looking recently too!

I did more than look. I bought!
Ml270 solved my "two car or one car" dilemma. One ml does fine thanks and doesn't look brash or showy. Just looks capable and sturdy which I believe it is. If image were not an issue, I'd have still considered an X5 but, seems chavs have made them their own now.

Its a lot of fun that jeep! so powerful...

I looked last year and ended up buying winter tyres.

Lada Niva was the best get anywhere budget option. Honda HR-V (not auto) the most reliable.

And it'll (car) likely be a whole lot easier to stop when it's slippy underfoot.

Ah! Reliability - the first requirement for serious winter use. (Being stranded overnight in sub-zero temperature could kill you). If that's not important than chances are you don't really need a 4WD.

winter tyres on the vito make it pretty good. 60-40 weight distribution, fwd. I passed quite a lot of stuck notionally superior off-roaders in the heavy snow last year.
