Can't Stop looking at 'Winter' 4x4's!

winter tyres on the vito make it pretty good. 60-40 weight distribution, fwd. I passed quite a lot of stuck notionally superior off-roaders in the heavy snow last year.

The off-roaders score with additional ground clearance, but snow has to be a foot plus deep to require it.
It takes an off-roader with winter tyres to better a car with winter tyres. Without them the 4WD is no better and a whole lot less agile and harder to stop.

Peeps like big off-roaders. If you do, fine, just buy one. You don't need winter as an excuse!

I got myself jeep wrangler
Got winter tyres for my merc but scared to use it against other drivers which won't have winters on and can end up crashing into me.No thanx too many careless drivers
With the Jeep I will be feeling safer lol

I've been looking at a set of winter tyres for my ML (with rims too...) but every garage I go to says, "you've got loads of tread on those. Don't waste your money!" and these are Yorkshiremen!

I'm going to see how it goes in the snow with 6-7 mill of tread on std fit tyres. If its compromised by the width, I'll think again, although I think it would have to be bad to not just go for chains on the front and go slow.

They are talking utter rubbish. Snow tyres are entirely different and tread depth has little to do with that.

I used to use chains. Winter tyres now. No going back to chains. They are a PITA to fit and even more so at the roadside in the dark at minus 8C.

Winter tyres or 4wd won't save you from someone in a car without these things out of control heading towards you.

In adverse weather one must risk assess a journey and question whether it's a) really neccessary and b) if so is it more safely achieved by train, plane or bus.

At 6:30am, whilst still in bed, I filled out my risk assessment form. I looked outside the window and there was a frost, so I put my winter socks on. I mapped out my route, told my wife what time I was leaving and when I would be expected to return. Satisfied I had made all reasonable precautions I felt it was now safe to walk from the bedroom to the living room to watch the F1. I'm pleased to report I successfully accomplished this, largely due to my winter socks that kept me warm.

Err..You will be capable of movement if you have grip. Might help you drive out of its path, or better still, not be a sitting target due to being stuck.

You may already have them if you have standard wheels on your car. The size doesn't lend itself to high performance tyres.

Our Continentals are M+S (mud and snow) and perform impeccably in the snow. We had Dunlops once too and IIRC they were M+S too.

Take a look on the side wall for either a snow flake symbol or "M+S".

Actually my V70R went anywhere in the. Snow!!!!

330 BHP. Hit the W (winter mode) and even on low profiles it was amazing!!!!

Buy any middle aged Land Rover product at your peril, Disco 2s are famous for rotting beyond economical repair and P38 Range Rovers and their succesors are dire for reliability.

Stick to a Subaru

I have a friend who has been through many range rovers. He loves them to death due to their "character".
But he has a saying that if you want to get home, get a discovery. If you want to sleep in a comfortable broken down car, get a range.
Air suspension, electrical and terrible rot in sills have plagued the last 3 he has had.

If you want something ultra reliable, get a Nissan x trail. My bro in law has one down under and goes up the snowy mountains very regularly. A work colleague also has one and swears it is the best all round vehicle for sale. I'm not convinced, but the reviews look good!

I understand they say this in Australia, "if you want to go to the Outback take a Land Rover, if you want to come back again take a Land Cruiser"

If only land cruisers weren't so expensive.
They just don't seem to depreciate at all!

Yeah, tell me about it!

Just looked at what £4K would buy me!

Trouble is it's not just 'Function over Form' Wifey hates the look of Disco's, Jeeps, Landcruisers etc etc etc

Merc ML270 or Range Rover is what floats her boat, hence the link.

They can't be that bad or they'd never make big mileages or win awards for best Off Roaders would they ?
