Can't Stop looking at 'Winter' 4x4's!

They are horrific on road.

There is no car I hate more than a defender. I cannot stand the things. Its irrational thing, I just hate them.

They are fantastic if you accept their limitations

Slow
Thirsty
Cramped
Expensive
Unreliable
Noisy
Slow
Thirsty
Rust prone
Leaky
Uncomfortable

But I had a 110 TD5 double cab and I loved it, drove it to Italy for a skiing trip once, started off keeping it to 70 to conserve fuel, after 3 hours I'd had enough and wished I'd not started and just kept it floored all the way (could keep a steady 90mph) but at that speed it just drank fuel like The Space Shuttle.

In the Alps though it really came into it's own - clearly it didn't get stuck once, although neither were any of the local Unos, but it was constantly misted up due to crap ventilation system and then, after a week of inactivity, it was the only car not to start, eventually spluttering into life on 1, then 2, then 3 then all 5 cylinders belching out black smoke all the time. After a mere 30 minutes of idling it was warm enough and defrosted enough to start the truly horrific trip back home! Useless under engineered vehicle, still loved it though, lots.

A number of people have spoken about the Dunlop tyres - there's loads of tread left on them though, too much to just bin

Bang em on ebay. I got £100 for my set of Grandtreks with 5mm left.

Did you really just say they are great on road?

Sent from my GT-I9300 using MBClub UK

I did. One man's "great" is like another man's "irrational thing". Entirely subjective. No point dramatising it. :)

I agree! I love every nut and bolt of my 97 Discovery. I am always amazed, when I look in the mirror, at the number of followers that we seem to attract on every journey. They are obviously marvelling at this beautiful example of British engineering and often reward us with appreciative waves as they, eventually, pass and I grin and wave back, knowing that, in some small way, I have enhanced someones day. :D. I wouldnt swap it for any other vehicle. :bannana:

Are you sure they're appreciative waves, or trying to signal something else? :D

Ahh.. now you come to mention it...I assumed that they were just signalling their opinion that I had been victorious in choosing the correct vehicle.
Never mind, when the snow comes I'll be the one going past with 2 fingers in the air. LOL.

If those tyres will fit ml270 17s then pm me with a price and location. I am not precious about road noise. But from Yorkshire so AM precious about saving money!

I too am looking for a winter 4x4. Want something small and reliable, thinking of a 3dr Toyota Rav4, the model produced upto 2005. They fare well in surveys for reliability, and buying guides for the best used 4x4s but the downside is high C02 emissions so they are tax band E or F depending on the engine.

Anyone own one of these?

My old man did. It was very reliable and never missed a beat.
