I'm sure I've read on here about a site where you can get car details from the registration for free but I can't find it. :( I know about www.mycarcheck.com but I'm sure there's another one. Any ideas guys?

What details do you need?

There used to be a car parts site online that gave you a VIN from a registration number but that is no longer up iirc.

If you are just after a make and model from the index then that's much easier.

The Eurocarparts site will tell you the model from the registration as will many spares outlets.

In summary, this is what the popular free registration searches offer:
Site|Make|Model|Year|Colour|Engine size|Whether insured|Notes
DVLA Vehicle Enquiry|Yes|Yes|Yes|Yes|Yes||It's definitive and provides further info, but you need to know the manufacturer and you have to click through from the "Vehicle Enquiry" link
RAC Car Data Check |Yes|Yes|Yes||Yes|||
HPI Check|Yes|Yes|Yes||Yes|||
Tyre Shopper |Yes|Yes|Yes|Yes|||Not always fully up to date (which can be useful) but sometimes gives odd results
Euro Car Parts|Yes|Yes|Yes||||
AskMID |Yes|Yes||||Yes|Requires CAPTCHA entry and acceptance of T&Cs; only free for a vehicle you are permitted to drive.
I tend to use Tyre Shopper or HPI Check for a quick check, and will back this up with the DVLA site if I need to be sure of the results.
