car ramp options

hi

I currently have and use a set of standard car ramps like these:

what i'm after is a similar style drive on ramp that offers a higher lift. I've read about ones that you drive on like above, but then can also raise it the same height again?

i also like the look of this:

they have to be removable so i can store them around the side of the house etc (out of the garage).

i think the see-saw ones are very expensive.

anyone any ideas, solutions or experience with these ramps?

i dont want to spend hundreds/thousands of pounds on them so anything too tech is out the budget.

i suspect something similar to what i have now but with a higher result may be best?

You see cars on ramps at car lots - something like this would be ideal but i suspect costly?

those see saw style ones pictured are around £700 each. I looked at these for display puposes but decided they werent worth it.

You can get mobile ramps... i was looking at them for my home garage... prices start at around £1.5k though

i'm looking at around £200 tops really. My drive on ramps were £30 so was hoping for an extra £200 would give me something..... a quick search on the net prooves otherwise :(

i'd love hydraulic ramps (and i guess would probably be happy in spending £1000 or so on some cheap/2nd hand ones) but the garage is a double garage and having the legs of the ramps there would mean another car wouldnt go in side by side. The have to be removable from the garage.
 
These axle stands have a max height of 500mm....a bit higher than average I think.
 
I have two sets of ramps similar to yours - if I need to work under a car , I drive onto the first set , then use my trolley jack to lift the other end of the car and slip the second set of ramps under the wheels . This gives me a couple of feet of clearance to work under the car , with the entire car supported safely and level .

It does take about 10 mins to get the car up or down .

Thats the minimum support height... the max is 750 mm. :eek:

I'd be concerned with the whole thing toppling over or slipping off when trying to jack the car up to that height. You'd have to use 4 at a time and jack all corners up roughly level as well I'd have thought.
 
Have you considered digging a pit? About 2 graves end to end would take you about 2 days if you are fit.

i do have two sets of ramps aswell but always a bit worried about jacking the car up so high whilst already on ramps at the front... :confused:

my wife would put a stop to any pit being dug ;) - also it would need to be supported and possibly cause problems with my gargage supports?
 
I usually reverse the back end up onto the first pair of ramps , then use the trolley jack alternately between the front jacking points , raising each front wheel in stages and slipping the ramps progressively further in as I go - taking care not to lift one front wheel too much more than the other - usually two or three stages is enough .

I also have four axle stands but only use these if I have to remove wheels to change discs etc. I have never attempted to lift one end with the other end on axle stands and would be worried about the stands toppling in such an operation .

Since one of my friends died when a car fell on him , I tend to be somewhat paranoid about safety when working on my cars .

I feel the car is more stable on the ramps .
 
i have a set of axle stands aswell - i agree i wouldnt like to go under the car with the car resting on them only. the wheels on the ramps however and the other wheels on the floor with a big brick to chock the weeks seems OK.

the extra adjustable ramps linked above are what i read about - at near £300 though probably not worth it for the extra height IMO.

Looks like i'll be keeping with my existing ramps.

I have made ramps in the past (the see saw type) but got a very nasty letter from a solicitor telling me to stop, copywrite etc. I used to supply pairs at £450 plus vat and carriage. Anything can be made but delivery cost to your neck of the woods from me may be prohibative. PM me if you would like custom made, happy to quote on any welding and fabrication work.
 
Have you thought about an airbag jack?? very quick- effortless. Another couple of ramps like you have already as Pontoneeer suggested for after the car is jacked up. http://www.air-jack.com/default.asp

Be careful... these are not to be used for any extended period of time.

I have sold over 1000 of these air jacks..

I know people who have left cars up for hours on them but I wouldnt take the risk..

I should have made it clear the airbag jack was just for raising the car to ramp/stand/support block level and NOT to be used over an extended period of time as Jay said.:o
 
I wish I still had my welder, I'd make my own, see saw type.
Mind you £70 for an Arc welder and then cost of metal.:rolleyes:
