car ramp options

This is, indeed, an interesting thread.
I thought it was only me who chuffed about getting the car supported safely up in the air - And then worked flat on my back.

My way is to lift the 4 corners using a trolley jack under the jacking points and then to slide ramps progressively under the wheels.
If I need the wheels off, I support it on ramps and stout wooden blocks under the jacking points at that end of the car.

It's a bit laborious, but it MUST be safe.
My mate welded me a really heavy-duty pair of ramps some years ago when I ran a 2.1/2 ton Chevy.

Cheers.

the 240v car hoist on ebay looks good but too far away from me really. looks like i'm stuck with my standard ramps....

The easiest way to raise a car for a DIY'er is to drive the car up some ramps, chock it then raise the back end with a decent trolley jack, then position some suitable stands under the jacking points.

Look out for 2nd hand stands, they are cheap. My 5 tonne, high lift ones only cost me £5 from a garage auction.

Is it considered OK to raise the rear of the car by using a trolley jack under the Diff? (not planning to go under the vehicle, only to take both rear wheels off)

I wouldnt risk it although I've seen many a tyre shop do just that.

missed it... bid up to £400, not worth more than that...

I guessed that was your bid. There was another one as well, but they had/have a start of £500 I think.

You could probably get one made for less, but that would need testing.

What do you want, a ramp or a plinth with access ramps.?

its just for display purposes.. the one company that makes most of these would do them for me at around £550 if i buy three..

I'll design some that would get me over the "copywrite" issue I had before, a big cost factor though is the galvanizing, minimum charge circa £120, probably get 4 pairs galved for that. Also load testing if required would be silly. Group buy anyone? :)

Useful thread,

I noticed with the w210 that the front overhang prevented it being driven onto the ramps, you can of course buy ones with flatter approach angle but these are £130+

Here's my elegant solution :p

Going to fabricate the wooden parts with a hook to fit over one of the steps, also tailor the approach at an angle.

I'll work through things over the weekend and pm you.

Could you let me know what you work out and the likely cost?

I have family in Mansfield, so collection could be very easy.

Cheers,

Richard

Richard, do you realise just how big display ramps are? The ramp is about 300mm wide over the "driving" part. the mid stabiliser is about 1200mm wide, BUT, the length is about 7.5m. You would need something like a 7.5 tonne flat bed lorry or similar to transport them.

Edit: length 4.5m
