Car will not Start when Engine is Warm

I've a problem with my W reg C220 CDI Elegance (Seq). Its starts fine when cold but when the engine is warm/hot I have to wait for the engine to cool down before it starts.

I can live with this when I go to work, but very irritating on short-journeys as you can imagine.

I took it down to a MB dealership and they ran a diagnostics check - and basically they said it’s not worth repairing as it will cost way to much as the car is only worth about £2k. But I've got a feeling it may be as simple as changing the spark plugs or the oil and fuel filter?

Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong and how to fix? Thanks

If it's not the crank sensor check the injector leak off rate from the leak off pipes.
If excessive they will also be leaking in air when switched off.

The hot syndrome does point to the crank sensor, as recycled says.

Hi and welcome Sydney.

It could be something like the crank position sensor, but equally it could be something more serious like a blown head gasket.

Without wishing to cause offence, you sound as if you may not be that mechanically minded - you mention changing spark plugs, but your car doesn't have spark plugs as it's a diesel. I think your best bet would be to have the car looked at by a friendly local garage with proper mechanics, rather than taking it to a main dealer. Too often nowadays, they aren't interested in looking after older cars. There are also lots of independent Mercedes specialist garages - a number of them post on the forum. If you let us know whereabouts in the country you are, I'm sure someone will be able to point you in the right direction.

Cheers,

Gaz

Just as a check, get a garage to run a seperate earth cable from your starter to your negative terminal on the battery.

My Dads Rover did this for ages and this fixed it.

Dave!

Thanks for the advice. Having spoken o a few ppl I will try to get the crank position sensor replaced.

Anyone recommend where I can get this part from and how much should I pay for one, and is it easy to fit yourslef? If so where will I find it? Thanks.

Its a W reg C220 CDI with an automatic SEQ gearbox. How do I tell if its a 202 or 203 model..?

the chassis number will tell you.
On the windscreen, or by the door. WDB202 or WDB203xxxxxxxxx

Its a 202 model. Anyone recommned where to buy a crank position sensor from? and what price I should pay?

I doubt it is the CPS. get a leak off test done first. This will save you from bolting on parts without proper diagnosis.

They also suffer with air leaking in the fuel lines but this mainly happens when cold not hot.

Fixed Problemo

Thanks for your advise ppl.

The starting problem with the car has been fixed now. I took the readout that I had from the MB dealership and took it to a local garage which I've used regularly for the past few years so I definitely trust them.

The Crank Shaft Position sensor was first replaced with no luck. Then they replaced the Camshaft sensor and the fuel line seals which fixed the issue.

I've been driving the car around for nearly a week now and all looks ok.

The computer readout from the MB dealership also advised to change the airflow sensor and glow plue relay sensor which I will get around to do later.

Including Labour, replacing the two sensors (Crank Shaft Position sensor and Camshaft sensor) cost be £200.
