2012 c250 sport amg
Has my cars nct ( mot) and flew through . Cars a 2012 w204 c250 cdi manual. Got my certificate of road worthiness and hopped into car and went to put into reverse to drive of from testing center. Car wouldn't go into reverse or 2nd gear. Won't go in with engine off or on. Nct centre not liable for any damage caused while tested of course so it's my issue to repair. Anyone come across this issue before

Thanks

engine off, try putting in reverse, then start it with clutch depressed. Does it work?

maybe clutch hydraulics poor or damaged release fork? possibly gear linkage needs adjustment?

What about the rest of the gear's?? With the engine switched off, it should go into all of them, if not, then Flyingspanner's suggestion of gear linkage damage is the most likely cause....bent rod's?? someone tried to force it in to gear and they got bent? You would not be the first one to have car drive into the MOT centre....and have a problem driving out.....

Hi flyinspanner thanks for the reply.

Won't go into reverse or 2nd with engine on or off unfortunately.
Nursed it home using all the other gears which worked fine but 5th bit stiff funny enough

Is it gearbox out job to see if bent rod of broken linkage.

Its either a gearbox internal selector forks issue [ gearbox out job] or the something wrong with the selector mechanism. Modern cars have lots of electronic safety features to avoid inappropriate gear selection [ without the clutch depressed for example] This is easily achieved in an automatic box with electronic gear selection but more difficult with a manual box with possible electrical signals required from ignition key/brake pedal/ clutch pedal switches. This would in all likelyhood require the ignition to be on to function [ POWER] and switches to be ok If memory serves there may be some form of locking pawl[solenoid operated] and reverse light switch assembly attached to the rear of the shifter assembly for this purpose ?? If someone was to attempt to shift the gearlever by force while the car was powered off or the clutch not depressed the locking pawl might get damaged and possibly interfere with subsequent gear selection. You might get some indication of this from your owners manual if there's such a safety system on your car?

If it was fine when you drove it in , and broken when you collected , then there's a strong argument that they damaged it - why would they not be liable ?

They have duty of care to look after your car whilst in their care .

Hi pontoneer,

you sign a waiver before they do test. standard practice for all nct tests here. I believe its in case a timing belt breaks during tests or like me they ruin your gearbox etc. i have left it to an independent Mercedes specialist so hopefully know more next week.

Not good ; although I’m not convinced , with ROI being part of E.U. , that isn’t in contravention of statutory rights , and basic law - duty of care - still applies .

They shouldn’t do anything that would be damaging to a roadworthy car , but at same time if something was ready to fail then not their fault .

There should be independent adjudication by a government appointed and impartial engineer to determine who is responsible.

Benefit of being in E.U. is they can order your government to change their ways .

Edit , thinking on impartiality, the E.U. should have right to bring in an inspector from another member state - for example a TUV inspector from Germany, to look over your car and decide whether it was ready to fail ( your problem ) or they broke it ( so they pay ) .

Garage rang. The selector or selector box ( trying to remember ) is gone so car getting a full gearbox rebuild . Not great news but at least closer to getting fixed and getting the car back as gone since December 13th

Having a the same problem with my c250 now.. can’t get reverse gear and 2nd seems abit stiff but does go in to gear.. when I put it in 1st it seems as though it’s reverse it’s like the hole selector is twisted, did anyone know what the problem is?
