My friend who has a SLK 55amg was looking to swap his car for a white one. His is Silver. I suggested that rather than taking a risk on another car why not get it wrapped in white?

Good idea?

Anyone done this and pleased with the results? How long does it look nice for, before it peels?

And, nearest place to SE / London area that does it.

cheers

Wrapping is nothing new; it's the same technique used for commercial vehicles.

Tell your friend not to bother with the fancy detailing/wrapping specialists, find a recommended sign-writers and they will do the job fine, they'll have had plenty of practice and should actually be cheaper.

If its done / wrapped by a professional then it should never peel, but expect to pay around £2000 for a top notch job using the best vinyl.
If you go cheaper and there is a vast difference believe me in vinyl quality then it will peel and look crap in a short time.
As with everything you gets what you pays for!

How does wrapping compare with dipping, cost, durability and finish wise?

dip? the whole car? All he is really after is a white car, but why should he take a chance on getting a bad car when his 55amg is perfect.

I used to have my old passat cc Plastidipped, good stuff in the way they it gets everywhere so is hard to see any of the original colour, bad in the way that when you come to take it off its in all the little nooks and crannys and it a nightmare!
And if you get it Plastidipped be careful on what the guy uses, there was a place my way that used normal paint thinners instead of plastidip thinners as it was under half the price but some cars when they peeled it off it brought the lacquer off too. If they use all official plastidip stuff it'll be fine though!

Clearly you haven't seen the difference on a good specialist wrap and a sign writers wrap, people like Midlands car care who remove as many panels as possible to wrap them rather than wrapping and cutting on the car, I have seen many cheaper jobs where when removed the paint is scratched where some idiot has cut the vinyl on the car and cut through to the paint...

You are right, I don't know what you have or haven't seen, I know what I have seen and have see the damage cheap wraps have done to the original paint (poor paint prep, scratches where blades have been used to cut vynl and have cut through paint)

I still don't get how people who own a prestigious brand like mercedes are so tight over certain things! Well mainly just seems to be the detailing part of the forum.

Is it not less complicated if people bought the car in the colour wanted:dk:

The worse wraps I've seen have been done by the types that market car wrapping as a new phenomenon and their company usually replaces an S for a Z like "Car Wrapperz" etc

I know two sign writers that can wrap a car that well you'd have to open the bonnet to have in look in the engine bay to check the real colour.

Your experiences are obviously not the same.

It is but if you can't get the car you want in the colour you want - it's a good way around it - especially if the car you want is in a rank colour and a lot cheaper as a result!

My waist has got nothing to do with eating wraps... it's more from too many pizzas I think!

:D

A spray dip has to be a better alternative. Far greater choice on colour and effect/finish. Easily removed.

There many more experienced sprayers than wrappers

I mentioned dipping a car before and some smart **** said how do you get it in the bucket...
