Has anybody had any experience of those carpet cleaners you can hire out from B&Q and the like?

I would like to clean the carpets in the flat, but since i don't have whole lot of carpet in the flat, i'm trying to weigh up what the best deal here. Hire one myself or find a local company to do the work.

Get a local company in. By the time you have hired the cleaner and bought the shampoo etc it probably will work out cheaper and less stressful to get someone in.

I've used one you can hire from B&Q, it wasn't bad for the carpet we used in on. However we was advised by staff that if the carpet was expensive and had a long shag pile to have it done by a professional cleaning company.

When you reckon that a basic course in operating a carpet cleaner runs 2 days, you can safely assume that a pro company will do a better job.

At work we have a £600 Karcher carpet cleaner which we use for emergency cleans of spills etc in our rented caravans, but we still get the professionals in for the routine cleaning - they do a better job than we can, and I've been on the course!

I guess the parallel is- Do you take your car to the Stealership, or just borrow some spanners and a Haynes manual, with no knowledge, experience or training?

We regularly hire a Karcher from HSS to clean the carpets of an old person that we look after (she drops stuff all the time). It does a good job.

I think it's about £35 for a weekend, BUT doing a few carpets will also use about £20 worth of the shampoo stuff, and if you try and scrimp it then the carpet doesn't look as clean. So for a couple of carpets it may well be cheaper to get someone in.

Get it done professionally. Theyre quick, and covered by public liability insurance should anything go drastically wrong.

We have a "George" wet/dry cleaner. LINK.

We have several children and dogs and I'm known for being a mucky pup.

A great thing to have at hand in an emergency and keeps the Sprinter seats and car/house carpets in fine fettle.

It came in VERY handy when my 210 interior flooded due to a blocked drain. Soon got all the moisture out of the footwell carpets.

We have a Maytag Agility Carpet Cleaner & an all wool deep pile carpet that was left by last owner 11 years ago, carpeted throughout the house. The Maytag is brilliant,,, combine it with a dehumidifier & it really helps in the full drying of the carpet along

I'd get it done professionally too - I was quoted £90 for my hall and living room (Which is a very large room), I'd much rather that than pay £34 for a machine hire, £5 for products and a day of "Why can't I get it clean enough!".

The machines they use are not only much better, but will make it so your carpets dry quicker too.

We have the Bissell too -- makes a good job of our beige carpets...but it is hot work....:D

I've been Bisselling tonight. Our cream carpet and a greyhound don't mix well.

It was a last attempt to make the carpet look barely respectable for "visiting season" as we get close to Christmas. We arrived home this evening to find three lots of visitors knocking at the door in quick success, and Mrs D was horrified.

Well over 2.5 hours work and you can tell I did it but it doesn't look great. Used my secret weapon too - a spray bottle with mild solution of fabric hand wash and hot water, sprayed at close range into tough stains.

Toying with hiring one on Tuesday/Wednesday, to see if it'll do a better job that the Bissell. New carpet after Christmas me thinks...
