Damn! When I went to Halfords last Tuesday and asked for fully synthetic, I got Mobil1 0w/40 at £34.99 - wonder if the offer was on then?

How much do we need for an oil change on w202?

Unfortunatley one drum is not enough, not sure what individual 202's take but my C230K took 6 litres from an oil & filter change.

Bear in mind it only meets MB229.1

Can you explain what this means? I'm afraid I know nothing about oil or specs.
My car has used fully synthetic since day 1.
I used Castrol RS last year and thought it was great because my oil pressure never budged off the 3bar mark even after a motorway thrashing.
This year I've used Magnatec (which I think may not be fully synthetic) and it drops to 2 when hot (on tickover).
I want to use RS again ASAP. Is there a problem with it?

It is all rather confusing and not helped by marketing hype.

I believe Castrol are trying to shift stocks of that RS full synthetic because they are bringing in range of "extended drain" period oils, hence the half price offer. It is good oil but will not meet the extended drain periods demanded by MB229.3, Audi, VW etc etc.

Thread on this.

You're not kidding!
So, Magnatec is better than RS? or is that MB229.1 as well?

In terms of the "quality" of Castrol products are set out here:

http://www.castrol.com/castrol/productdetailmin.do?categoryId=82915276&contentId=6008719

Use the "What should i use in my car" tool to check your vehicle.

SLX is their full synthetic and intended for variable service intervals. The 0w 30 meets MB229.3.

RS is also a full synthetic but aimed more at the "performance" market. Good stuff but not really an extended drain oil and maybe not the oil of choice for a diesel. But if you are happy to change the oil every 6,000 miles or so depending on engine should be OK.

GTX is part synthetic. as is GTD. (Some of the GTD range does meet MB229.31)

There is no single answer. It really depends on what you drive, how you drive it and ultimately how much you care. Just find out what the spec. for your car is and go for that or a higher one.

So is this stuff any good ?

My dealer uses Shell Oils - I think its the Helix Super brand (yellow bottle?). Strikes me this might not be the best oil. Would I be right in thinking that ?

Cheers,
Jonathon

The Mobil 1 product is fine if that is what your car requires. It is a low ash oil designed for vehicles with particulate filters.

Not sure about Shell oils. Hard to get current data sheets.

Just popped into Humphries Tyre and Exhaust for an oil change. I always take it in between normal services as a "belt and braces" measure.

6.5 litres of Mobil 1, new filter, labour and VAT £34.95.

Can't be bad, can it?

Can't buy it any cheaper than that in the shops and I didn't get my hands dirty :)

Incidentally I always did this on my old Peugeot diesel which was sold in perfect working order at 167K miles (about 125k of which were mine).

That's very cheap!!!

Where are these guys located?

This was in Market Street, Bracknell. The Humphries chain seems to be located in the Reading, Wokingham, Bracknell areas although there is one shop listed in Motherwell.
