The "Brake wear - visit workshop" light has just started flickering on and off so I'd guess that at 33K miles the pad sensors are starting to come into play and it won't be long before the light is up permanantly

2 questions if I may:

How many miles before the change becomes urgent? It is due a service in about 1200 miles anyway

Can I change the pads myself (aka Ian Walker!) without invalidating the warranty? If so, are there better pads than MB at the same or less cost?

Many thanks

Change them yourself and use MB pads or equivalent.

It won't affect your warranty.

In answer to your question "How long will they last?" It much depends on your driving style.

I try not to brake heavily and like to think that I anticipate fairly well. 70% is motorway driving - pads on average have lasted 40K miles or so over my driving history.

I would fit EBC Greenstuf pads to improve braking and reduce dust.

Best to put them on the rear as well to balance the braking, otherwise the fronts will wear more due to doing more of the work than normal due to the higher friction of the EBC pads.

In the link below is the techy stuff, listed under each pad type.

Regular pads friction coefficient 0.46, greenstuff coefficient 0.55.

They definately dust a lot less and the dust doesn't burn into the wheel lacquer as it has no metallic particles. In addition they appear to wear the disks noticably less and leave them with a polished finis due to the smoother surface.

The linky you have is about the cheapest place to buy. Here is the one for EBC themselves.

You probaly need the single pin rears and to stop them squealing fit the existing shims and grease both the back of the pad and and the back of the shim.

As Dieselman, I have used EBC for years on my MBs and V70R though I have the green ones on my SL, I am not sure if I should have used the Red as I did on my last SL

The dust just washes off and is not so black as normal pads

Agreed 100%

I'm glad you agree as I'll be entrusting the task to you Mr. Walker if you would be so kind! :D Will speak later and sort logistics etc.
