I would appreciate if you can advise the followings:

a) I was advised to change the engine wire harness of my 1997 C200. Is it really necessary to change the engine wire harness when the car is not giving any problem?
b) If change is necessary, what are the wire harness need changing? Why?
c) What are the major components the engine wire harness is connected to?
d) What are the tools and equipment required to change the wire harness?
e) Are there calibration or adjustment required after the new wire harness is in place? Any special equipment required?
f) I intend to do it myself. Any special advice?

There was an issue with engine wiring looms in the early 90s. There are numerous posts about this. The idea was that the insulation would biodegrade once the car was scrapped but unfortunately the looms started to degrade EARLY in the cars accelerated by heat.  This was corrected sometime in 1996 so I dont think your car should be affected. :) :) there is a post about it on another forum.http://www.mercedesshop.com/Wikka/M104WireHarness Not specifically your car model BUT BASIC PRINCIPLES THE SAME :D :D .

Dear Graeme,

Thank you for the advice. The information and pictures in the web site quoted in your reply contain all the information I need. I intend to do a thorough check on the condition of the wire harness of my car to see if replacing it is necessary.

Cheers
