Have just bought a white C180 manual ( 1999) which badly needs oil change. This is my first MERC and I am over the moon ! I have a special tool to remove oil filter housing but am wary as I have no knowledge . I have a filter and what looks like very large circular rubber seal. What spanner size ( or plug wrench) do I need to loosen sump filler plug and what pitfalls do I have to watch out for? All advice gratefully accepted

I can't help with the spanner size, but at the risk of teaching you to suck eggs, these are pitfalls that have befallen either me or friends of mine when carrying out the apparently simple job of changeing the oil and filter :o

Not removing the old sealing ring from the filter housing. That's the big ring you have with the filter. Sometimes it comes off with the filter other times it stays on the engine. It's all too easy to forget to take it off :o

Not lubricating the new ring. Just smear some of the old oil on each surface before fitting.

Forgetting to replace the sump plug before filling with new oil.
That's a biggie. That's the one that gets you talked about in hushed tones. The conversation stops when you enter a room. People point at you in the street.

Repeat after me: "I must replace the sump plug"

Thanks Stratman for the valuable info. how tight do I go on the filter housing when retightening? is it about the same torque as is done when tightening plugs? and is it better done when the engine is cold or slightly warm ?

The sump plug needs a 13 mm ring spanner or socket if I remember. Use a new copper washer! Tighten to 18 lbsft torque. Be careful to put the new cartridge on to the plasic cap the right way. It will just snap in.The felt washer end is at the bottom. Recommended torque for the oil filter plastic cap is also 18ft lbsft. Check the seals after the engine has warmed up.

Me too - but a haynes manual as suggested is a MUST for such basic queries - so go get one spannered . . . ;)

Haynes Manual

Thanks guys. :D :D I agree buying a Haynes manual is essential if you want to maintain a Mercedes yourself. It will pay for itself time after time so is a good investment. ;)
