Didn't see it posted already but just popped into Halfords to get some oil and they have 20% off all the Mobil 1 oils.

4L of 15w/50 cost £30.39 instead of £38.

15w/50 is the right oil for your C43, that's what i use.

asda is selling 5/50 mobil 1 for £4.50 per litre

Not available UK-wide though, unfortunately, so I'd take some while your store has it.

Mobil are said to do some branding tricks in the UK to avoid easy or direct comparisons between the price the Mobil 1 products are sold at in mainland Europe and the lofty UK prices

However, whilst the 5w-50 is sold widely in most of Europe sold only by the larger ASDA outlets (& Costco I think) in the UK but has not been shifting.

It was advertised as first fill for the SLR

I think they are get of rid of surplus stock, as it was reduced from £9.89 / litre, I just saw it while doing my shopping at my local Asda last night

15W? I was expecting a high performance engine to be using a 0W/40, I actually didn't know that Mobil 1 came in 15W, I thought it started around 5W?

I always associated 15W with cheaper mineral oils, 10W with middle of the road semi synthetics and 5W and better with fully synthetic.

Though 50 I guess is better for high revving high temperatures, and 15W better for higher mileage engines.

I spoke to Birds of Uxbridge, they are a very well respected garage for tuning Merccedes and BMW's and they reccomended 15/50.

Unless you have an oil temp problem, I wouldn't use 15w-50.

0w-40 or 5w-40 would be a better choice.

Cheers

I am surprised that oil is being sold cheap, our suppliers are now reviewing their prices monthly, it used to be annually. Over the last 2 months we have seen a 15% increase and just received another price file for April and the prices have gone up another 10%.

There is even a shortage of certain grades, 5w/30 is very difficult to get hold of (Ford grade oil). I do know that it is partly a marketing ploy, the same company announce every autumn that the raw ingredients for antifreeze are in short supply so stock is limited and prices will go up so order in bulk whilst we have it!!! Yeah, right, heard that one before.

I can concur that all oil suppliers (and I have 6) have put their prices up 4 times in the last year at least.

There is in fact a shortage of basestocks which has put pressure on prices.

Some surplus stock or shifting API SL to make way for API SM I would say.

Cheers

Oy satch don't drag me into this oil price war! Lofty

yes 15-50 does sound a hefty oil for an AMG?! then again, never had an AMG so not sure.. I used 5-40 in my 500SL IIRC..

I have always used 15w-50 based on some comments on this site, but now you have me thinking - any other C43 or AMG owners care to share what they use?

0W/40

I think Birds are a reputable company for tunning cars and should know what they are talking about, they did blind me with science as to why w15/50 was the correct oil so i took there word for it.

Also there was an article in the Mercedes enthusiast when they compaired the C36 and theC43. The oil recommended for the C43 was Mobil 1 W15/50.

Any oil experts out there who can explain to the W15/50 brigade why we are useing the wrong OIL?

Many thanks.
