Had my 2002 CL500 for about a year and a half now. over the last couple of months there has been a low rumbling sound coming from the rear of the car. Had Merc do a health check and they said the bearings were all ok they did not run it on the road. I replaced the rear diff (second hand) the noise is not as loud but it's still there. Anybody out there any ideas??

How are the tyres - if they aren't staggered sizes you could rotate them round and see if the noise moves.

Welcome BTW.

wheel bearings, or tyres.

Can you isolate the noise to one side?

Tyres, tyres, tyres.......
Had exactly the same noise issue with a set of Michelins,
The noise / rumble was consistent under accelleration / braking, which eliminated the diff', also no change on cornering but I was absolutely convinced it was the bearings. Purchased a new set of bearings but luckily the mechanic did the decent thing & called me before he fitted them. With the wheels in the air, we span them by hand and the inner face / shoulder was "lumpy" is the best way to put it.
I put a couple of "cheap" (£75 each) skins on & hey-presto - all the noise was gone.

The only noise from the rear end of my CL500 was a V8 burble

Thanks John ......Unfortunatly they are staggered and the tread is still good on them about 5mm on both. All of the wheel have been re-balanced just in case but to no avail

Thanks for your reply David see answer to John above. Is there a bearing in the prop shaft of the CL ?
