CL55 amg strange noise

Thanks for that but I just want a second hand one for as cheap as possible and they are all around £30 on eBay! Thanks anyway :)

Good luck. Mine are AMG CL55 shafts. They retailed at over £1k from MB. The splines are different to that on my C55. They look identical and I was advised they were.

Good luck.

That's fair enough, you may be right but a c55 and a cl55 are completely different cars they have different chassis codes. I'm talking about a driveshaft from a cl500 going onto a cl55 they share 95% of components and as mentioned above, Ricky fitted cl55 driveshafts to his cl500.

Just be careful. WIS showed the same part # on mine and they are identical to look at. It was when they went into the diff the splines became an issue.

So the shaft may look identical and may be listed as he same.....But..

Yea I get exactly why you mean, it is very strange that something with the same part number didn't fit though!

I'm a bit of a gambling man, so far I've managed to save a lot of dosh doing what others said shouldn't/couldn't be done! It might not even be the driveshaft to be honest, I'm getting it up on a ramp on Friday morning to do some more investigating before I commit to buying anything :).

Well here is the thing. On my C55 the rear prop donut was shot. That does cause noise (on mine a low grumbling) When the donut came out it fell apart in the guys hands. Got a new one from ECP (on here).

Yes I have seen that this is a very common problem, once I've had a look under it I'm sure I'll have a shopping list!!!

Ok so just thought I'd do another test, I put the car in neutral and took the handbrake off.

Jacked up the rear passenger side and spun the wheel, there was definately some friction/noise created, I did the same for the drivers side and got the same noise. Should the wheel not spin completely freely as if it was on a smooth bearing?

With only 1 wheel jacked up, you would have been turning the diff, and the prop?

I have no idea, I just wanted to see if I could replicate the noise (I'm pretty sure that it did but it's hard to tell from outside the car).

So the problem is the pinion bearing in the diff... Could someone give me the part number for the diff so I can try and find one? Should add its for a 2001 CL55 AMG.

Cheers, aidan

Get the whole diff re-built. It's the best and cheapest option.

Where can I get this done? There are second hand diffs on eBay for under £100 posted

A diff re-build will be £300 ish.

A second hand diff is risky as you don't know the quality

Been reading up and it has come to my attention that the s320 uses a diff with a 3.07 ratio, this could make my car pretty fun to drive as the 55 ratio is 2.82!!!! Question is, will it fit and work?!
